Shawn's obituary
Shawn Lamar Matthews, 61, passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at Hospice of Wichita Falls with his wife, Carrie, by his side. Shawn was born October 9, 1961 in Vernon, TX to Wayne Matthews and Oma Carpenter. He grew up in Electra, TX and many knew him from hanging out in his parent’s bar, Red’s Place-later known as Wayne’s. In 1980, Shawn graduated from Electra High School. Home of the Electra Tigers. There, he was Class President, Mr. EHS, and he played basketball, baseball, and football. Shawn continued his sports career by playing football for University of North Texas for a year and playing baseball for Ranger Junior College. Anyone who knew Shawn, knew he was a sports enthusiast. From football to bowling, if it was on the sports networks, he was watching it. Shawn was passionate about his favorite sports teams. He loved the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Rangers, and the Texas Longhorns. Shawn went on to become a referee for the Texas Association of Sports Officials. He even lived out his dream of refereeing the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp in the early 2000s in Wichita Falls, TX. Shawn also loved to grocery shop and cook. He would get his best cooking ideas from watching cooking shows on the Food Network, particularly The Pioneer Woman. He also loved hanging out in the Man Cave with his dogs. Shawn worked for Oak Farms for 25+ years and was the “Milkman” for several schools in Wichita Falls, TX. Shawn was preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Oma. He is survived by his wife Carrie Johnson; daughter Megan Parker (Matthews) and her husband Nicholas Parker; stepsons Ryan and Zachary Argenal; stepdaughter Rachel Argenal Steinberger and her husband Landon Steinberger; and grandkids Tre Shed, Trevor Shed, Alex Argenal, Jasmine Argenal, Adrienne Argenal, Isika Argenal, Evorey Argenal, Milena Steinberger, Danielle Steinberger, George Steinberger, and Henry Steinberger; and many many friends. Shawn came to know many people in his 61 years of life. He could never go anywhere without bumping into someone who knew him. His friends say “Shawn had a great sense of humor and would light the room up with his personality” and “He was a good man and a better friend.”The family would like to express their gratitude for those who donated to Shawn’s GoFundMe account. Proceeds from your donations will go towards cremation and memorial service.
A memorial service will be held on August 19, 2023 from 3:00PM to 5:00PM at the Elks Lodge 4205 Seymour Highway, Wichita Falls, TX 76309.
