Shannon's obituary

Shannon Peter Stegg

Rest in the Mountains

August 25th, 1959- December 2nd, 2022

A beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed unexpectedly on Friday, December 2nd, 2022. Shannon is survived by his daughter Chelsey (Tyler), his grandchildren Piper and Axel, his brothers Shawn (Sharon) and Troy, his sisters Robin, Shelley, Hillary (Doug), and Jan (Warren).

Growing up, he enjoyed diving and was amazing on the 3-meter board. His family remembers him as a white-haired adventurer and was outside climbing anything he could as a child. He was raised in the Catholic faith and believed in God, using nature as his guide. He thrived and enjoyed street hockey as a young adult. He has climbed mountains around the world. Shannon has saved several lives becoming a firefighter and EMT for Fulton County Fire Department. Upon leaving the fire department, he went on to establish his own tree company where he shared his knowledge of nature and climbing.

Shannon established climbing routes throughout the Southeast and was an avid member of the climbing community where he had his second family. His alpine climbing adventures were extraordinary and his most treasured times in his life. He stated in the AJC when asked what the best place he has ever been, Shannon said, “It’s place I’ve never been to yet.”

There were many stories his friends and family have shared regarding their time with Shannon. He was humble and kind. He was willing to take the extra time to help someone with tree issues, climbing, or personal things. As his daughter, I will always remember him as my hero, someone I looked up to and envied for his strength, perseverance, and kindness. He shared his love for the outdoors with me and I will cherish every memory and pass it on to my children. May you forever rest in the mountains of heaven pop, until I see you again.

A small private family memorial for Shannon will take place at his home followed by a Celebration of Life date TBD. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Southeastern Climbers Coalition or Carolina Climbers Coalition in his honor.
