Shahida's obituary
Shahida Javadani Mufti was born on April 11, 1945, the sixth child out of nine in her family. She was lovingly given the nickname of "Maisaab" (meaning prim and proper) by her loved ones. Her grandchildren deemed her "mamajanoo" (dearest mom) rather than the traditional "nani". Shahida Javadani Mufti passed away on April 17, 2025.
Shahida spent her childhood years living in Lahore, Pakistan. An avid lover of philosophy, Shahida went on to study the subject at the University of Panjab, earning her first Master's degree at the top of her class (in first class). After immigrating to the United States, Shahida pursued her second Master's degree at Adelphi University in Education. She became an ESL teacher, although English was her fifth language, and taught for 25 years for the New York City Public Schools.
Shahida was a skilled seamstress, often making clothes for her children and grandchildren. Additionally, Shahida was an impassioned cook and baker, teaching her grandchildren how to cook traditional Pakistani food and all her baking tips and tricks. She was an avid traveller, having visited 20+ countries in her lifetime. Always an academic, reading remained one of her biggest passions, amassing her own small collection of books throughout her life. One of her favorite authors was Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner.
