Sarah's obituary

Sarah 'Ranny' Atkins Mast, 45, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 13 while surrounded by family. Ranny was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend to many. For the past five years, Ranny fought ovarian cancer with grace, dignity, and a relentless will to live. Ranny was born May 2, 1974 in Waynesboro, Virginia to father James Atkins and mother Cecelia Anderson. Ranny lived most of her early life in Richmond, Virginia and graduated high school in 1992 from Manteo High School in Manteo North Carolina. Ranny's love of teaching began while living in Frankfurt, teaching conversational English to German children. While living in Europe, Ranny began reading the teachings of Maria Montessori, which would eventually guide her career path. Ranny started teaching at Montessori of Mount Pleasant school and soon achieved her Montessori teacher credentials in Early Childhood Education. She dedicated her career to the Montessori method and found absolute joy in educating children. With her sunny disposition and always positive attitude, Ranny touched the hearts of hundreds of students and families from Montessori of Mount Pleasant in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, West End Montessori in Richmond, Virginia, and Heartwood Montessori in Cary, North Carolina. Ranny's proudest achievement in life were her two sons, Jack, 16 and Henry, 12. She was a gentle, caring, affectionate mother to her boys and always succeeded in providing unique childhood experiences filled with delight and wonder. Both Jack and Henry have inherited Ranny's love of art, music, nature, cooking and the endless desire to learn about and explore the world through traveling. Ranny will be missed dearly by those she has left behind. Ranny is survived by her husband of 19 years, Myers Mast, children Jack and Henry Mast, parents James and Kathryn Atkins, Cecelia and Wayne Anderson, brothers Andy and Michael Anderson and sisters Rebekah and Katie Anderson, and Julie Anderson Prather. She is also survived by in-laws Ralf & Diane Mast, sister in-law Wellons Mast Wilkinson, brothers in-law David Wilkinson, Ryan Prather, and Tripps Moog. She is further survived by neices Grace, Dailey, Cooper, and Anna Moog, Lilly and June Anderson, Grey Prather, Penelope Anderson and nephew Kingston Anderson, all of which she lovingly adored. Ranny was blessed with numerous other extended family members that she held closely to her heart. There will be a grave side service at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia on August 24th at 2:00pm, followed by a Celebration of Life at Maymont Park, Garden Hall, at 3:00 pm.
