Sadie's obituary
Sara P. Hines peacefully made her transition on August 10, 2021 in Savannah GA. Born to the late Robert and Catherine Robinson (nee Brown) in Staten Island, NY in 1935. Sara, a native New Yorker lived most of her life in Staten Island, NY until moving to Savannah, GA in 1995.
Sara was a loving wife to the late Herbert E. Hines (married 1953), and was preceded in death by her siblings Robert Robinson Jr., Anita Solomon (nee Robinson), and Albert Robinson Sr. She raised children Dr. Christopher E. Hines, Jocelyn Hines- Cooper, Melanie Amponsah and Dr. Alison Hines, and was a maternal guiding light for many others inside and outside the family.
Sara was a lifelong learner and educator. Earning a Masters in Education from Fordham University, Sara was very accomplished in the profession. Her early years of teaching began at Richmond Early Learning Center where she served as the director. She later became a public school teacher in Staten Island, NY and then in Savannah, GA engaging students inside and outside the classroom. Sara always cared very deeply about her students and their families. After retirement she continued to teach adult education courses and tutored the children/grandchildren of friends. Many of her friends were former students or parents of former students. Sara loved to learn something new and was always willing to share her knowledge with others.
Sara was an activist for many noble causes. She volunteered and donated to many organizations with shared values such as C.O.R.E ( Congress of Racial Equality), The Poor People’s Campaign, and People’s Action Campaign to name a few. She never shied away from “Good Trouble” even if it didn’t directly impact her.
She was an unrivaled seamstress, writer, chef, baker, and used these gifts to share her love. What she didn’t know how to do she would find a way to learn. She loved to create! Many hold fond memories of decadent desserts or savory meals shared at her table. Her hands also lovingly created elaborate quilts and clothing which are a part of her legacy. Sara was a passionate, lifelong pursuer of all manifestations of culture: cuisine, music, dance, poetry, and art.
Sara is survived by daughter Jocelyn Hines-Cooper, daughter-in-law Maggie Hines, grandchildren Jeremy E. Hines (Jessica), Chelsea Cooper, Lyndsey Cooper, and Miranda Hines, great-grandson Cameron E. Hines and a host of nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
