Sandy's obituary
Mom in memorium
Sandra Jean Hynds Pease, “Sandy,” beloved mother to four children, of Foley, Alabama, passed away peacefully at age 81 in Baldwin County Hospital on June 24, 2025. She was surrounded by her children – either by her side or on the phone – as she left this earthly world.
Sandy was born in Norwich, CT on January 17, 1944 to Gloria and James Hynds. Sandy loved Connecticut, the friends she made there, and her time spent with her grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins – especially the summers at their lake houses.
Sandy is survived by her four children: her son James Eugene Konrad, his spouse Dianna; her son Eugene John Konrad; her daughter Katherine Mary Varcoe; her daughter Elizabeth Marie Konrad; and stepson, Kevin Bryce Pease and his spouse Nancy Pease. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Stephen Pease and spouse Jessica; Erika Jane Konrad, Scott Pease and spouse Esha; Aaron Guiseley, Jackson Konrad, Annie Konrad, Andrew Varcoe, and Cassie Varcoe, as well as her great grandchildren, Sonali Pease, Jackson Pease, and Rohan Pease.
Sandy lived in Connecticut until her father was transferred to Lake Park, Florida. There, she attended and graduated from Riviera Beach High School. Sandy made many friends and adored not only her classmates, but her high school and the era in which she grew up. She loved 50s music, was an Elvis Presley fan, and if there was a dance floor she was on it.
At age 18, she married Eugene Konrad and they built a house together in Jupiter Florida. There, they had their first three children, Jim, Jack, and Katie. They then moved to Sandy’s home state of Connecticut, settling in the hamlet town of Colchester. It was there they had their fourth child, Betsy.
Although the marriage did not work out, Sandy and her husband went on to remarry.
Sandy’s second husband, Gene Pease, was the love of her life. Together they raised their “Brady Bunch” family. They both worked, but always made sure at least one of them if not both were at their kids’ football, baseball and soccer games,
cheerleading events, and school choir, band performances and plays. Although the children were more than well provided for, she and Gene ensured they were raised to have a good work ethic and to be responsible.
Their house was always open to the neighborhood children and family friends. One of her best friends, Kip, who lived next-door would actually come over just to see the action and the laughter.
Gene’s international aviation job took them to Querétaro Mexico in 1983 with Betsy and Katie in tow, as their other children were in college or the service by then. They all fell in love with the culture and the beautiful people who became lifelong friends.
Sandy loved to golf and had an active golfing and bridge schedule in Mexico which carried on throughout the years in the subsequent moves to Dallas, TX and later, Cocoa Beach, FL. Even when not playing she watched tournaments on TV.
Sandy also loved Thanksgiving and even more, Christmas. She put so much thought in making sure all of her children and grandchildren received their Christmas wishlist. Sandy loved Christmas music and especially going to church to listen to the choir sing. For two months she would watch Hallmark Holiday movies or have Christmas music playing while she read. Sandy always had a big Christmas dinner and an open house afterwards for friends and family.
Christmas will never be the same without her.
She also was a beach and ocean lover, and she and Gene relished their condo on the water in Cocoa Beach. Even after her beloved Gene passed away there in 1995, she ended up purchased another condominium on the water - on Singer Island, FL.
After some time, Sandy decided to purchase a motor yacht on which she lived for several years, docked in Soveral Harbor, North Palm Beach.
On “Days End,” she entertained friends and her marina neighbors every Monday evening, and of course family when they visited her. She also took sailing and boating trips with friends to various islands including Bimini, the Bahamas and Barbados. The photos and stories her friends Kelie and Elva have shared
who were with her in all of these experiences portray Sandy’s pure happiness, sense of adventure and lots of laughter.
Sandy then decided to sell her yacht and move closer to her best friend Kip and her husband Don who had retired to Foley, Alabama. At first she moved a few miles away from them to Perdido Key, FL until she purchased a larger home for her to live with her daughter and grandkids in Foley, AL.
She enjoyed her small town life, and the simplicity and slower pace the charming town offered. She was active in the community and especially her church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
Sandy was an avid reader from childhood and read everyday, especially in her last years. She loved board games, playing words with friends with her cousin Marie and goddaughter and niece Sandi, hosting parties, attending Mardi Gras balls, local events and festivals, and her grandchildren’s’ soccer games until her lung disease no longer allowed her to. Her daughter Katie and her two children Cassie and Andy lived with her for the last 20 years of her life, taking care of her in her final years.
Life will never be the same without Sandy, aka Mom, Grandma, Grandma Sandy and Aunt Sandy.
She is sorely missed.
May she rest in eternal peace, and her soul be free soaring with the angels and reunited forever with her love Gene Pease.
