Sandy's obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce that Sandra Gellar, known to those who loved her as "Sandy", born on December 9, 1944, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026. Her life was one filled with love, joy, and an unwavering spirit that touched everyone she met.
Sandy is lovingly survived by her husband, Richard Gellar, whom she married in 1968 and twice again in the same year, showing their undying love for each other. Their beautiful family includes their daughters Susan McIntosh, Elisa Newkirk and Samantha Gellar-Smith, sons Michael Gellar and T.H.M. Gellar-Goad. She also leaves behind her brother, Allen Edwards and sister, Bess Sawyer.
Her legacy extends to her grandchildren, Brianna, Alexander, Hunter and Clara Newkirk, who were her source of endless joy. She was predeceased by her father, Carl Edwards and mother, Catherine Edwards.
Sandy was an alumnus of Fayetteville State University, where she obtained a B.S. in Psychology in 2014. Prior to that, she attended East Carolina Teachers College on Scholarship for the Women's Basketball Team in 1963, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she fell in love with her beloved husband, Richard Gellar. Sandy had moved to Seattle, WA in 1969, to Topeka, KS in 1970 and fifteen years later, to Charlotte, NC, where she lived out the rest of her years.
She devoted her time as a volunteer at Girl Scouts and was a regular attendee of St Stephens United Methodist Church. She was also a proud member of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology.
Sandra had a fascinating spectrum of interests. She loved watching UNC-Chapel Hill Basketball games and was an ardent supporter of the Tar Heels. She reveled in the performances of operas and was a master player of Farm Town. She had a penchant for Picasso's art and was a regular at Texas Roadhouse. Her love for the color green was unmatched. She enjoyed a cold Diet Coke, reading a good book like 'We'll Prescribe You a Cat,' and watching her favorite movie, 'Blazing Saddles', quilting, spending time with family, and being a grandma were among her favorite pastimes.
Sandy loved vacationing at the beach, and fish was her favorite dish. She was passionate about civil rights and equality her entire life, and sang 'My Best Friend' by Don Williams with Rich every night before bed up to the very end.
In lieu of flowers, a fund is being raised on her behalf for the "Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina". Contributions may be made at "https://everloved.com/life-of…". Sandra will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those she cherished.
