I’m thinking about how we met on Kangaroo Island in Australia many years ago! Two Americans with a Stockholm connection. I’m honored to have known you, Sandra. Your joie de vivre and your love of travel continue to inspire me.
I miss you Sandra. It still feels so surreal we never get to hear your laugh again.

Sandy always said,
2016, Copenhagen, Denmark
Sandy always said, "Let me know when you're in Europe," and sure enough she met me in Denmark when I had a work trip there. I'm forever grateful for that amazing day and night exploring and catching up. At dinner, the table next to us ordered a whole pig's head. Of course, Sandy struck up a conversation, and they offered us a bite. With my eyes closed, it was delicious. Sandy, I will never forget your infectious sense of adventure and encouragement to take a bite out of life. I miss you even though we rarely saw each other in person. You changed my life for the better in so many ways. 💞

Las Vegas - Trade show
So many fine memories of Sandy…her support for me as a writer and contributor at F+W. Her terrific smarts. A memory that stands out as an example of her delightful quick wit… Sandy, Mike Ward, and I were strolling through Caesers Palace, headed for dinner. We were attending a trade show in the 1990’s and had some time to wander the strip together. As we headed through the casino crowd, a cocktail waitress appeared, walking away from us at a high rate of speed, a shiny gold ‘emperor-like’ medallion glittering on her lower back. Without missing a beat, Sandy leaned over and said to me, “don’t look now, but that lady has a cartouche on her toosh!” I always thing of Sandy when I’m in Vegas…and laugh.

Sandy was like my cool big sister when I lived in Cincinnati. I was fresh out of college —F&W Publications was my first real job. It goes without saying that she was a wonderful mentor to me, helping me figure out how to put that new journalism degree to work. But the memories that really stay with me are discovering new restaurants, exploring cool areas of the city, hosting parties, after-work happy hours, and heartfelt chats in her office about friends, boys, and work.

Before moving to San Francisco, I stayed with Sandy after my lease expired. The night before I moved, she and some other friends closed down the local bar together (Haps!) and off I went the next morning with my one-way ticket to California and her full support of this crazy life decision I was incredibly freaked out about having made. She promised me it was a good move and she (as usual) was absolutely right.

I'll miss you, dear Sandy. Thank you for the gift of your friendship.
Sandra,
Your fun and lively spirit will be missed.

When I think back to any party, celebration, concert or adventure I enjoyed in the 1990s, Sandy is there at the center—hosting, toasting, dancing, driving. With the music turned up. In 1991, when I started my first job at F+W, Sandy and I didn’t work on the same team, but she still introduced herself to me on Day One and asked how she could be of help. She quickly became a mentor, a colleague, a travel companion, and a very dear friend. Sandy made me feel I could do anything I put my mind to, and she was willing to give me a gentle kick in the pants if that’s what I needed to get on with it. In other words, a true friend. When my daughters came along, Sandy’s love and support enveloped them as well. And when her move to Sweden put an ocean between us, she always made sure to connect with me whenever she made it back to town.
Throughout much of this friendship, Sandy and I were co-workers, and I could point to a number of things that I learned from her that helped me professionally, but these are the lessons Sandy taught me that I find most important: Be generous. Open your home. Introduce yourself to the new person. Widen your circle. Accept the challenge. Go on an adventure. When you come home, have lunch with old friends. And when you play music, turn it up.
Thanks for the friendship, Sandy. I will miss you.
