Nana was a person that struck me as a woman of grace and beauty rarely found in women today.

The best moment that I remember about Nana is when I started asking her questions about her family and what it was like growing up. She told me so many stories about her family, but one in particular, that I remember, is the time when she grew up in Oklahoma. When she was a little girl, her and her mother, Charlene Grace Golden, were living with Charlene's mother, Lena Lessie Golden (maiden name Jennings), after Charlene divorced Walter William Lyon. Little side note, Charlene divorced Walter because he gambled too much and would always come home drunk and depressed. Anyway, Sandra was about 4 years old when Charlene and Walter got divorced, and from that point on she never saw her real father again until she got married to Papa. Sandra told me that when living with her Golden side of the family, she discovered that they were Freemasons and Eastern Stars. Freemasons were generally men who owned business and the Eastern Stars were women who were married to men who owned those businesses back in the 1940s. Sandra wanted to be an Eastern star because all of her classmates at school were part of the Freemasonry religion. However, her mother said No, and Sandra was pretty sad about that. She never understood why her mother would not allow her to join the Eastern Stars. Another story that she told me was about the Golden family business. The Golden family use to run a general store called the Golden General Store. Not a very creative name, but it did get straight to the point on who owned it and what the store was about. If you don't know what a general store was like back then, it is like the super Walmarts of today, where food, some times clothes, tools, etc, were sold. If the General store did not have what you needed, then you would put in a request with the store manager and get the items to be delivered to the General Store. The store was located near some train tracks in Clifford County, Oklahoma, I believe, and after school, Sandra would go there to be with her grandfather, Charles Cleveland Golden. Sandra did not remember much about her grandfather, but she did remember receiving a lollipop from him when she went there. The store no longer exists because of a tornado storm that swept through Clifford County in the 1960s or 70s. I can't remember exactly when that happened, but it is no longer there. This was one of the many stories that Nana told me that stuck with me. I will miss her and miss being able to learn more about Nana's life and talking with her.
The Chicken Survives! One of…
The Chicken Survives! One of the first things I ever gave Sandy was (what I thought to be) a horrible chicken decoration. Then last year (20+ years later) while helping her move I somehow ended up getting it back. Seeing it so prominently displayed in Aubray's Memories post has made me completely change my mind and I'm now so glad to have this, rather unwanted chicken, knowing Sandy liked it and kept it around so long. Rather funny, and funny in a way I think Sandy would appreciate ... yes, The Chicken Survives, and now has a prominent place in my home as a reminder how privileged I was to spend some time with her.
