Sandra's obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Sandra Helen Carol Baxter of Beaver Bank, NS announce her passing on June 27, 2025
To those who did not know her it would appear to be an unassuming life. No famous acts of heroism, no events of historical impact but, for those who loved her, in big ways or small, she changed their world.
Born into a large family of eleven children in Port Elgin New Brunswick she was a “middle” child – she was a caregiver to some, a best friend to others. She had her favorites -if you were one them you knew it - but she loved and adored all of her siblings having a unique relationship with each one.
She worshipped her father, loved and respected her mother and formed a strength, stubbornness and tenacity that would reach legendary status. She was a dynamo, a wild cat, a spitfire, a princess and a darling all rolled into one. You did not mess with the people she loved and if you took her on you got more than you would ever bargain for. Her nickname was Mogwai because she was the most loving, sweet, adorable woman you would ever meet..but throw water on her and the Gremlin that would emerge could strike fear in anyone. She was not a woman to cross and, although we teased her about it, we were all secretly proud of her strength and bravery. She always lived life on her timetable and never once waivered from her values and beliefs.
In 1965 she married the love of her life and moved to Beaver Bank to raise a family. Over the next 54 years that love and loyalty grew to embrace her three children, her daughter and son in laws and her five grandchildren. She was our strength, the one we called when things went wrong and when devastating diagnosis’ and the challenges of life reared she supported with a love and compassion that carried us through.
She had an intelligence and wit that could have ruled any boardroom but instead, she took on the job of raising her children as a stay at home mom and homemaker. This path is often a thankless job with people not really understanding the sacrifice it entails - so we will say it now – thank you for the summers of homemade popsicles, swimming in the river, ice cream in the evenings, berry picking in the sunshine and camping on the ocean ; thank you for the cozy home filled with the smell of homemade cooking and amazing baking we walked into in the cool of the fall, the Halloween costumes, the pumpkin carving; thank you for the winters of hot chocolate when we came in from playing in the snow, the tea parties, the nights in front of the fireplace and the Christmas spirit that we will carry with us the rest of our lives. Thank you for helping us raise our children, for being so proud of us and for fiercely protecting us. Thank you for teaching us we could do anything we wanted to in life and that no person is better than another.
Although she would say she was a home body she loved to travel and see new things – Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Boston and, her favorite, Savannah – on every adventure she embraced the culture and the experiences and made lasting memories.
She was talented and diverse in her interests – tole painting, woodworking, cooking, gardening, wine making and crocheting to name a few. She will leave a legacy of “bests”: Best cherry pie, best gravy, best stuffing, best BBQ sauce and the BEST handmade quilts – the warmest, the softest, the most beautiful with every single stitch filled with love.
When she lost the love of her life six years ago she leaned on that infamous strength of hers but, her heart was broken. She still had adventures to Salem, trips to the shore and formed a new life but, she never got over her loss – as she often said “the first time he hugged me I knew I was in trouble”. She never stopped missing him.
Survived by Children Troy and Helen Anne Baxter, Shelley and Mike LeBlanc, Angela and Kevin Grant (there are no brackets for spouses – she loved them like her own).
