Sam's obituary

Samuel “Sam” Haycraft Mashburn Jr, age 82, of Louisville, KY, passed away surrounded by his family on February 3, 2023 at Baptist Hospital Palliative Care in Louisville, KY after a long fight with cancer and Covid complications.

Sam was born in Suffolk, VA to Samuel Haycraft Mashburn Sr. and Dorothy Elizabeth (McAdams) Mashburn on October 14, 1940. He attended Louisville Male High School, the University of Louisville and graduated from Western Kentucky University with a B.S., M.A., and Rank 1 Teacher Certification. He was a passionate Science and Biology teacher at various high schools including Ahrens, Jeffersontown, Doss, Westport and Seneca high schools in Louisville for 29 years. After retiring he worked at Home Depot for over 20 years.

Sam loved spending time with his family. He had many hobbies and interests. Inspired by his grandfather, he became a talented woodworker making many pieces of beautiful furniture and frames over the years as well as a sailboat. He never outgrew his love of nature with Red River Gorge being a favorite spot to explore with friends, students and family. Sam loved traveling the states by car enjoying nature’s wonders and had a special love for St. John’s in Newfoundland where he and his dear partner Iris loved whale watching. Sam loved anything to do with Native American Indians and their history. He also had a deep love for and connection with the Timber Wolf. Sam was an avid reader having hundreds of books on woodworking, history, psychology, zoology, botany, geology, biology and physics.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Forrest Calvert Mashburn.

Sam is survived by his dear partner Iris Allsmiller, children Laura Medford, Cristy Ballard (Ray), Andrew Gray (Regina), sister Emily Lynn Martin (John), grandchildren Kyle Medford, Cory Medford, Quinn Medford, Roman Ramirez, Jordan Gray, Samarie Gray, great-grandchild Cleo Blanco, nephew John Martin (Winifred) and niece Cheryl Tait (Lynn).

The Visitation will be 2:00 until 4:00 pm Sunday, February 26, 2023 at Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Rd, Louisville, KY 40291.

The Memorial Service will be held following the Visitation at 4:00 pm on February 26, 2023 with Neal Gossett of Southeast Christian Church officiating.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in his memory.
