Samuel's obituary

Samuel Garrison Grodnick (Velick)

August 11, 2005 – March 2, 2025

With deepest love and sorrow, we share the passing of Samuel “Sam” Garrison (Velick) Grodnick  on March 2, 2025. He was 19 years old.

Sam was born on August 11, 2005, and in the last months of his life he made a home with Jason and Sai in Laguna Niguel, California. Those nearly four months together were a gift beyond measure—time to reconnect, laugh, cook, lift, talk about the future, and simply be a family. After years apart, having Sam under our roof was a blessing we will always carry with us.

A dedicated and hard-working young man, Sam worked at Pelican Hill Golf Course in Newport Coast, CA and took pride in doing things well and doing them right. He loved weight lifting and golf, and he found peace in simple Southern California days—sun on his face, a good workout, and time with people who loved him.

Most of all, Sam touched our lives. He reminded us how quickly a home can fill with warmth, how a shared meal can heal, and how strong a young person’s spirit can be. His time with us was short, but it was rich, and it changed us.

Sam is loved and remembered by Jason Velick and Sai, his family in Laguna Niguel; by his siblings, Jack and Ellie; and by friends, coworkers, and extended family near and far. We are grateful to everyone who welcomed Sam, supported him, and saw the best in him.

A celebration of Sam’s life will be held in Laguna Niguel at a date to be announced. All who knew and cared for Sam will be welcome.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Sam by taking a walk with someone you love, lifting each other up, or offering a young person a chance to be seen and heard—small acts that meant the world to him and to us.
