Sam's obituary
Obituary: https://www.dignitymemorial.c…
Samuel Martin Fry died on Monday, August 26th in Sacramento, CA. Sam comes from a tight-knit family and is survived by his five siblings, their spouses and families (including a nephew and niece), his parents, and his beloved wife Kim.
Sam was the brightest and best of us. He was the light of everyone's life, and the gentlest soul anyone ever met. As the youngest of six siblings, Sam was a delight in the family from day one. As a child, he was a hilarious entertainer, a pure and kind soul, and incredibly thoughtful, observant, empathetic, and inquisitive. He made us laugh every day, he was creative and talented (an incredibly gifted improvisational musician) and simply so alive.
As an adult, he dedicated his life to libraries, community outreach, nonprofits, and grassroots actions like Food Not Bombs and the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen. He worked for the Sacramento Public Library and other libraries in town, connecting people with resources and creating programs to educate and enrich the community. He was the only one of us after the 2016 election to be so deeply affected that he was moved to take time off work, get plane tickets and go to Washington DC to March in the Women’s March. He cared deeply about human rights and women’s rights, supported the #MeToo movement and survivors, and organizations like WEAVE (Women Escaping a Violent Environment) and Planned Parenthood. He was also involved with the Black Lives Matter movement and out marching with the protesters during the summer of George Floyd’s murder. He loved books, music, basketball, documentaries, learning, helping others, laughing, and making people laugh.
Tragically, Sam had been struggling with a severe mental illness for the past year or more and has been in and out of hospitals and frequently in crisis. He eventually succumbed to his illness and took his own life.
We, his family and loved ones, are reeling from this news, even though we knew of his struggles. It is still a shock, and we will never be the same without him.
Prayers for Sam to be in peace and with us always. He was the kindest, funniest, most talented of person and we cannot think of him without remembering the laughing, delightful person he always was and will be in our memories. We were SO lucky to have him in our lives for over 30 years.
