Dear Friends and Family,

I have some difficult news to share. On Friday, Jim and I received a devastating phone call from our middle daughter’s boyfriend, Matt. Samantha had done laundry, dishes and had ordered a pizza with Matt’s mother for dinner. She was in good spirits and went to her room to await Matt’s arrival. Matt returned from work and went to wake her from what he thought was a nap…. But, she didn’t wake up. She didn’t move and was cool to the touch. He called the paramedics.

Samantha was pronounced dead at 4:26, May 27th. (She always had a thing for writing the precise times on things, huh Debbie. lol )

She has battled alcoholism for the past 4+ years and NEVER gave up trying to win the fight by following every piece of advice she was prescribed from “doctors lawyers and such”. Sadly ,as much as Sam begged and pleaded to be cured and fully trusted in the 12 steps. Knowledge Is Not Power. Living a troubled life was too much for her young body and spirit. We do not have autopsy reports yet but I think her heart broke because of all the stress and anxiety that this horrible disease has caused her.

We mourn the fact that she will never get to live a carefree and happy life that would have allowed her to share all her warmth and talents … when she had so much offer. We mourn the experiences in life she won’t see developer in front of her, and the adventures that won’t be taken because alcoholism took them away from her.

We are devastated beyond words that we will never press our bodies against her in a welcoming hug, we will never smell her Bath and Body lotion after a shower, hear her giggle with her sisters in bed, never brush her long red hair, and won’t be giving her heirloom pearls and a lace handkerchief on her wedding day.

The last two days the world has seemed void of color and distance of time and meaning. We are talking to God and Samantha constantly and are thankful that our Bahamian paradise allows us the ability to pause time when the world crashes down around you. It has allowed us great time of reflection, meditation and ridiculously loud crying!🤧

Please pray for our family, Christina and Amy, who have been by Samantha’s side like glue since they were born. (All 3 were within 5 years of each other and everyone thought Samantha and Amy were twins!)

Please include Matt Wahl and his family in your prayers. His family has experienced more pain in the last year than anyone should endure. And of course for Samantha, she needs everyone’s good vibes as we all do. Please know we feel her spirit and know she is happy and free from torment. We are all striving for peace.

Jim, Kim, Amy, and Christina,

I have thought you guys often over the past couple of weeks and you are in my prayers each day.  I spoke to Amy while I was in Florida, but I can tell from all of the pictures how much Samantha was loved and how important family is to each of you.   My heart goes out to all of you.   If there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to reach out.

My sincerest condolences,

Lora Newnam

Dear Jim, Kim, Christina, & Amy,

I was so very sorry to hear of Sam's recent passing. My memories of her, from our time together at WMES, include her kind, gentle nature, her creativity, her curiosity as a learner, her intelligence, and her athletic abilities. She was a joy to have at the school.

May the many memories of your sweet daughter and sister make this time of grief a bit easier.

With my heartfelt condolences,

Ginger Roupe
