Samuel's obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of Samuel, fondly known as Sam, on January 17, 2025, at the age of 21. Born on June 27, 2003, at Whipps Cross Hospital, Sam was a light to all who knew him and left an indelible mark on the lives of his family and friends.
From his early years at Clark’s Montessori in Ilford to Benhurst Primary School in 2007, followed by his time at Gidea Park College and later Becket Keys School, Sam was known for his boundless energy, unwavering dedication, and a charming smile that could brighten any room. A natural adventurer, he excelled in athletics and was recognized for his exceptional achievements at Havering Athletics Club.
Sam’s journey into adulthood was marked by remarkable achievements and cherished moments. In 2016, he joined the RAF Air Cadets, 6F (Romford) Squadron, where his hard work and leadership earned him promotion to the rank of Corporal. After successfully completing his A-levels, he embarked on his military career by joining the Royal Air Force, beginning Basic Training in 2021. Upon graduating, he progressed to RAF Cosford, enrolling as an Aircraft Technician in Avionics. In 2023, he continued with Phase 2 training at Brize Norton.
Above all, Sam was deeply devoted to his family. Becoming an uncle to Naya in 2019 and Eliya in 2022 brought him immense joy. His love for his heritage and relatives was evident in his frequent trips to St. Lucia, where he celebrated family milestones, honoured loved ones, and remained deeply connected to his roots.
In October 2024, Sam traveled to Ghana with his parents to honor the memory and legacy of his paternal grandfather, Eric Odoi-Okpoti Odotei. The trip was especially meaningful as it gave him the opportunity to surprise his grandmother, Margaret, whom he had not seen in nearly five years. Sam was warmly received by his extended family, some of whom had not seen him since he was a child.
His short life was filled with love, laughter, and countless adventures, from weddings and family holidays to standing proudly alongside his sister, Elisha, during their time at school. His 19th birthday in 2022, celebrated jointly with his sister, was a joyful and unforgettable celebration, a true testament to the immense love and pride his family had for him.
Sam was deeply loyal to his friends. He maintained strong and lasting relationships from nursery through primary and secondary school, and into the military. He cared deeply about his friends, regularly visiting and checking in on them to offer support, encouragement, or simply to share a moment of laughter.
Though his passing is sudden and deeply painful, Sam’s memory will forever be etched in the hearts of all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
