My two older children were in Sallie’s second grade class and I’d volunteered to help out. We quickly became buddies. I loved her gift of teaching and in particular, her communication style with children.
We had been friends for about three years at this point. I remember I walked down the hallway in front of her classroom. It was late afternoon, the kids were outside and the hall lights were dim. Sallie must have heard me walking down the hall because she seemed to have hurried to the door and poked her head out. She said, “shhhhh” and motioned me to quickly come into her classroom, whispering, “come here, come here”. Mind you, I was the only one in the hall. It was so cute and at the same time hilarious. I walked in, actually Sallie grabbed me by the arm and pulled me in, shutting the door behind me. Now, I was really interested. She continued whispering, “I think Mr. Shitara is going to ask me out on a date!” Yes, she called him Mr Shitara. She continued whispering, “Should I go?” I whispered, “do you want to go?” She nodded enthusiastically!
Their wedding was beautiful and so fun! Mr. and Mrs. Shitara, and of course beautiful Jessica, bought a house 2 1/2 blocks from us. Close enough for lots of visits and spaghetti.
A few years later we each had a daughter. Sallie and I would walk with them, back and forth between our houses, so Gracie and Andie were little buddies. Once, Andie left home with her suitcase and a neighbor found her (she was 2). Her response, I’m going to Gracie’s house; she was going the right way! Several years after that, Sallie called me at 2:00AM to say, wake Andie up and come over! The goose is hatching!” We ran right over not realizing it could take a while! It was fun wee hours!
I will remember Sallie’s joyful, open spirit, her kindness to children and her honest friendship. I don’t know why I was granted the privilege, but it was my honor to be with her during this last season and final days of being able to reach out and touch her. I thank God for that opportunity. I thank God for Sallie.
Sending so much love to the Shitara family. Her light was so bright, I can still see her smile and hear her laugh. I met her when I was in elementary school and thought she was the coolest teacher but I couldn’t have her because I was too old already. You could just tell what a special person she was. She was always positive and put God first and that gave her a calm confidence and a smile that is unforgettable. Sallie was always so loving to my grandparents as a neighbor, my family as a friend, and to my kids and myself. Her heart was just full of so much love, especially for the children in her life. ❤️

The smile on her face says it all....she loved her students ❤️
I met sallie when she was my son’s (Andrew) 2nd grade teacher at LBBES. She was a sweet teacher and loved her penguins. She was so fun and they had a lot of fun projects and assignments for 2nd graders. We will miss spunky sallie, but praising God that she is whole again with no more pain and suffering. I can see her smiling face right now ❣️🥰🙏🏻❣️
Please accept deepest condolences for your family's loss. Our hearts are with you and your family during this time. With love from Amanda, Luke and Penny Ward.
