Ruth's obituary
Ruth Lee Lowery (née Smith), 77, passed away on March 9th, 2024, at the home of her son, in St. Louis, Missouri. Ruth was born December 22nd, 1946, in Ironton, Missouri to Garrett and Emma Smith. She was a 1964 graduate of Arcadia Valley High School. After high school, Ruth earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Ruth Smith met Bill Lowery of Gideon, Missouri, while they were both students at Southeast Missouri State University. They were married in January of 1966 at Red Star Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Bill and Ruth’s marriage of 57 years is a testament to the love and commitment they had for one another. They were blessed with three children and three grandchildren. Bill and Ruth lived and worked in St. Louis, Missouri until 2000, when they moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas.
Ruth began her career as a stay-at-home mom, where she created a daycare and a preschool program at her home. She continued her career in teaching elementary students at West Overland Christian, Marion, and White Rock Elementary Schools. Ruth was active in serving the Lord by leading the youth group and teaching Sunday school classes at her church. She served in church hospitality positions and as a volunteer in the church nursery.
Hosting dinners at her home and creating baked goods were second nature for Ruth. She enjoyed creating food from her garden and spending time landscaping in her yard. Her love of antiques and her interest in history were evident, as she held leadership positions in the Arkansas chapter of The Questers. Ruth was very creative and participated in selling her work at various crafts fairs in the area.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Mary; and brother in law, Henry Huitt. She is survived by son, Timothy and wife Denette, granddaughter, Paxton; son, Thomas and wife Yolanda; daughter, Tamah White and husband Daniel; granddaughters, Abigail and Amelia. Ruth Lowery is also survived by her sister, Doris Huitt; sister Janice Delashmit and husband Paul; and brother James Smith and wife Donna.
