Ruth's obituary

Ruth Anne Lack, 60, of Lebanon, Connecticut, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt left our world on September 1, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her devoted husband, Fred, her daughters, Stephanie (Michael) Mastalerz, and Alexis MacDonald, and her grandchildren, Lucy, Josie and Wesley, as well as many beloved animals.

Ruth loved her family and friends fiercely. Her fire burned so bright, even in the midst of her battle she continued to stay positive and drink up as much of life as she could. She accomplished many amazing things throughout her fight, she became an inspiration to those closest to her. She was always eager to cook your most favorite meal or sweets for birthdays, be a comforting ear to listen and willing to help in any way she could. If Ruth loved you, you knew it and it was a blessing. Her grandchildren Lucy, Josie and Wesley were the apple of her eye. She loved taking them to fairs, to the beach and watching them at their sporting events.

Ruth worked as a dog groomer and dog trainer for most of her life. Eventually she and her husband, Fred, owned and operated a donut business together in Colchester for many years. Creating and baking fun and colorful donuts for the little kids brought her immense joy. She also liked to hold fundraisers for wildlife rehabilitation, homeless pets, homeless people and youth organizations with her donut trailer. Ruth was always one to turn around and help the next person.

Ruth's love of all the world's creatures was well known from the time she was a young child. She spent the majority of her life saving countless dogs, cats, horses and everything in-between. She was the voice for the voiceless and their salvation.

Ruth enjoyed riding her horses, showing her dogs and participating in many dog sports. She also loved the outdoors, hiking, kayaking and gardening.

Ruth gave it her all to make the world a little better and she succeeded not only in deed but she inspired countless others to do the same. As hard as it is to say goodbye, she has shown us what it means to be truly grateful and just how brave one can be.

“She was beautiful, for the way she thought. She was beautiful, for the sparkle in her eyes when she talked about something she loved. She was beautiful, for her ability to make other people smile, even if she was sad. No, she wasn't beautiful for something as temporary as her looks. She was beautiful, deep down to her soul. She is beautiful.”

― F Scott Fitzgerald

In her memory she would want her loved ones to live life to the fullest, get out and explore, follow your passion, and tell those you love how much they mean to you. Donate your time, food, toys or blankets to a local animal shelter, foster or adopt a homeless pet or spend time doing something for someone or something else that means something to you; and think fondly of Ruth.

A Private memorial service celebrating Ruth's life will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that you make donations to Mona's House - A Place For Homeless Pets or Freedom First Wildlife Rehab Inc. These two rescues were close to her heart.
