Mrs. Ruth Deardorff

Mrs. Ruth Lois Deardorff, 98, of Goodwin House in Alexandria, Va., passed away on Thursday, November 18. Her husband of fifty-three years, Harvey W. Deardorff, preceded her in death in 2002.

Born June 7, 1923, in Roselle, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Oscar A. & Lucy I. (Simon) Wenz. Ruth attended Linden High School followed by Kean College where she majored in education. She worked at the Standard Oil Research Lab in New Jersey where she met Harvey. Following her marriage to Harvey in 1949 they settled in Clark, New Jersey, where Ruth taught the primary grades in the Clark school system for sixteen years and volunteered as a Girl Scout leader. Following her retirement, Ruth was a volunteer teacher at Children’s Specialized Hospital from 1985 to 2001. Ruth and Harvey also enjoyed traveling extensively during their retirement years and were active members of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clark.

In 2007 Ruth moved from New Jersey to the Goodwin House in Virginia where she was one of the most active members of the community serving on the Residents Council and excelling in painting and other arts.

Ruth is survived by two daughters, Ruth and her husband Shree Subhash of Seattle, Washington, and Joan and her husband, Jack Sterling, of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. Also surviving are grandchildren Dylan Sherwood of Pennsylvania, Dev Subhash of New York and Neil, Jay, and Kris Subhash of Washington state and six great grandchildren.

Interment will take place at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens, Woodbridge.
