Russell's obituary
Russell David Sikes passed away peacefully in hospice care on July 11, 2025, in Georgetown, Texas, at the age of 64. Born on April 23, 1961, in El Cajon, California, Russ spent the majority of his life in the Kansas City metro area before relocating to Texas in 2017.
Russ is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Carol; his children, daughter Lauren Nicole, son Kevin Nicholas, and daughter-in-law, Rachel; and his treasured grandchildren, Molly Kate Nicole, Jarrett David, Luke Raymond, and a fourth grandchild expected later this year. He is also survived by his brothers Rodney Sikes and Richard Sikes, as well as his beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his best friend and twin brother Raymond “UR” Sikes, his father Jack Sikes, his mother Shirley Sikes, and grandparents Dorris and Pauline Nickle.
Along with his twin brother Ray, Russ excelled in athletics at Grandview High School and went on to play basketball for the Missouri State Bears while earning his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. He later completed an MBA at Rockhurst University, which propelled him into a distinguished 37 year career at AT&T. Russ also ventured into family restaurant ownership and operations, partnering with beloved Kansas City brands like Sheridan’s Frozen Custard and Taco Via. But the role Russ may be most remembered for is that of a coach—he found every reason he could to be in a gym. From assisting in Maranatha Academy’s memorable 1998–99 state tournament run to coaching his own children’s and their friends’ youth sports teams, Russ poured his heart into shaping young athletes and building community through sports.
Even more than his professional and coaching accomplishments, Russ most deeply valued his role as a husband, father, and grandfather. His life was marked by humility, steady love, and quiet strength. Though he often described himself as a socially awkward introvert, those who knew him experienced the opposite—time with Russ meant being genuinely seen, heard, and appreciated. His deep curiosity about others made everyone around him feel important.
Russ built a lasting legacy of faith within his family, modeling the love of Christ that continues in the lives of his children and grandchildren. His quiet leadership and heartfelt interest in others leave a legacy not only of professional and personal accomplishments, but of relationships deeply rooted in love.
A memorial service to celebrate Russ’s life will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Journey Bible Church (13700 West 151st Street, Olathe, KS 66062). Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. for seating. Following the service, all are invited to join the family in the Fellowship Hall for a time of visiting and refreshments. Attire is business casual.
