Russell Patrick Knights, 82, of Fredericksburg, VA, was lovingly received by his Heavenly Father on October 9, 2023.

Russell (Russ) was born on March 17, 1941 to Walter and Olga Knights of Brightwaters, NY. Russ attended Bay Shore High School, where he played varsity baseball and soccer before graduating in 1958. Russ then went on to study at Defiance College in Defiance, OH where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Sociology.

Russ served his country with honor and dedication in the U.S. Army National Guard where he completed a six-year commitment from 1963 to 1969. Russ had a long-standing career as a social worker, case manager, and supervisor for Suffolk County, NY, where his career spanned 34 years in public service.

Russ married his adored wife Christine in 1972. A devoted family man, Russ and Christine were blissfully married for 51 years. They resided in Wading River, NY for 37 years, moved to Wake Forest, NC, and finally settled in Fredericksburg, VA.

In 1997 Russ retired from public service. Upon retirement, he spent some of his leisure time playing golf, enjoying nature, watching sports, attending his grandchildren’s events, and spending quality time with his friends and family.

Russ was predeceased by his father and mother. He is survived by his loving wife Christine; brother Walter; son Christopher (Erica); daughter Robyn Walker (Brandon); and his six grandchildren: Lindsay (Jay), Jared, Carson, Natalie, Hayley, and Ellie.

Russ was known for his quick-witted humor, soft and gentle nature, and unwavering compassion. Those who knew him, loved him. Those who never met him, would have loved him. Russ was always thinking of others before himself.

A memorial service will be held at The Church of the Messiah in Fredericksburg, VA on Sunday, October 29, 2023 at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The American Heart Association.
