Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 26, 1945, to Alma Lynn and Sylvia Smith, Russell was the fourth of five brothers. Mechanic, geologist, fly fisherman, golfer, investor, carpenter, chef, mathematician, astronomer, water color artist, historian, bibliophile, and more, he was uncompromising in his pursuit of knowledge and excellence in every task he undertook. He had degrees from Utah tech, and was a graduate of the University of Utah majoring in geology and chemistry. …
