Russell's obituary
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 26, 1945, to Alma Lynn and Sylvia Smith, Russell was the fourth of five brothers. Mechanic, geologist, fly fisherman, golfer, investor, carpenter, chef, mathematician, astronomer, water color artist, historian, bibliophile, and more, he was uncompromising in his pursuit of knowledge and excellence in every task he undertook. He had degrees from Utah tech, and was a graduate of the University of Utah majoring in geology and chemistry. Russell was a man of dignity, honesty, and strength, with refined taste and a genuine sense of humor and wit in his use of words. —A true modern Renaissance man. Russell had a deep love for the outdoors, classic cars, hearty meals, fine wines, and delicious desserts. A hardworking man, he was always busy with a new project—whether restoring Porsche engines, renovating bathrooms, experimenting with watercolors, or fixing anything that needed repair.
He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and beloved pets, including Chewie, OJ, and Kizzy. Russell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Christine, his sons, Mike & Mark, and many dear family members and friends.
