Russ's obituary
Russ Simpson of Dahlgren, VA
November 24, 1941 - August 14, 2023
Born Homer Llewellyn Simpson, Jr. in Keyser, West Virginia, he was called Rusty, because he was born with red hair, then later in life went by Russ to all who knew him. He was the son of the late Homer, Sr. & Kathryn DeMuth Simpson of Keyser, West Virginia. He is preceded in death by his younger brother Charles Dean Simpson of York, Pennsylvania.
He led a life full of adventure through his time in the Navy (USS Saratoga), West Virginia University (Theoretical Physics), and his 34 year career at NSWC Dahlgren in Virginia where he was awarded a patent for his research and work on a holographic data storage and processor. He ran calls for the Dahlgren Rescue Squad for 5 years with many a story of getting from KG to Mary Washington Hospital so quickly and safely that the staff thought he must have floated instead of driven up the road. Russ was also very active in his own business where he worked very hard on uplifting people, life motivation, business skills, positive thinking, and family values. He was an incredible husband, father, and grandfather who always gave his undivided attention when needed. A deeply Christian man, he spent time as a Gideon Speaker and consistently instilled the principles of Jesus’ teachings into his everyday life.
Russ was an artisan at heart. His artistry went into photography, calligraphy, science fiction writing, guitar playing, and printing. Forever setting the bar higher and reaching for the stars, his dream in youth was to be an astronaut but was not admitted into the program since he didn't have 20/20 vision. He refocused his energy into becoming a private pilot at Shannon Airport in Fredericksburg, VA. Flying was his life's biggest passion.
He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Barbara Stout Simpson, King George, VA; daughter, Sarah Snow(Chris), King George, VA; son Richard Simpson, Fredericksburg, VA; along with four, what he would call outstanding, grandsons that lit up his life: Ryan, Mark, Kyle, and Cory Snow, King George, VA.
His body has been donated to the Virginia State Anatomical Program for medical research and training where it can be used for future good. Afterwards, his ashes will be taken up to the mountains of West Virginia.
