Rumi's obituary
In Loving Memory of Rumi Funderburk Day
September 15, 1948 – December 16, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Rumi Funderburk Day, beloved mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, who departed this world on December 16, 2024, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Born on September 15, 1948, in Okinawa, Japan, Rumi lived a life rich in love, resilience, and boundless generosity.
Rumi’s journey began in the beautiful Okinawan town of Henoko, where she grew up and met her future husband, Frank Funderburk, who was stationed in Okinawa with the U.S. military. Their story began across oceans and cultures, and together they welcomed their first son, Charles, in Okinawa.
In 1975, Rumi and Frank moved to Killeen, Texas, seeking a new life in the United States. There, they welcomed their second son, Lee. Later, they planted roots in Houston, Texas, where their family grew with the arrival of their daughter, Tina. Despite the challenges of transitioning to a new country, Rumi faced each obstacle with courage, determination, and an unwavering commitment to her family.
Rumi and Frank built their life together, starting Ramrod Trucking and eventually branching out into their respective passions. Rumi became a hair stylist, finding joy in connecting with her clients and making others feel beautiful. After Frank’s passing from cancer, Rumi found love again and married Thomas Day, with whom she shared years of companionship and laughter.
Family was Rumi’s greatest treasure. Known affectionately as “Oma” by her grandchildren, she devoted herself to her sons, Charles (wife April) and Lee (wife Laura); her daughter, Tina (husband Michael); and her nine cherished grandchildren—Karson, Kaleb, Kohen, Kayli, Ellie, Finn, Gray, Hayden, and Ryan. Whether attending their soccer matches or gymnastics meets, Oma was always their biggest supporter.
Rumi’s life was filled with passions and simple joys. She loved traveling, especially returning to her beloved Okinawa. A green thumb at heart, her gardens were a testament to her care and dedication. She loved shopping—especially for shoes and fuzzy treasures—and found thrill in the excitement of gambling, from slot machines to poker and sports betting. Her excitement for life was contagious, and it brought her immense happiness, especially when shared with friends and family.
Her loyalty to her beliefs was as steadfast as her love for her family. Stubborn and spirited, Rumi was a proud Republican and an avid Fox News viewer. She enjoyed watching movies and TV shows, particularly her favorites; American Idol and The Voice, where she often became emotionally invested in the contestants, sharing in the triumphs and dreams of others.
Rumi touched countless lives with her selflessness and generosity. Known for giving the shirt off her back, she was always there for her family, friends, and anyone in need. Though her English was sometimes difficult to understand, her love and kindness were unmistakable and her devotion to her family was crystal clear.
Rumi is preceded in death by her parents, Shukiechi and Toshi Higa; her first husband, Frank Funderburk; and her second husband, Thomas Day. She is survived by her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren, who will carry her love in their hearts forever.
Rumi was a force of nature, a beacon of love, and a woman who brought light and joy to everyone she met. Her stubbornness made her strong, her laughter made her unforgettable, and her love made her irreplaceable. Though she is no longer with us, a part of Rumi will live on in all of us.
She will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Rest in peace, dear Oma. Your love was a gift, and your legacy will never fade. You are loved beyond words.
Your thoughts and support during this difficult time mean so much to us. Flowers are welcomed as a way to honor Rumi, but in keeping with her wishes, we would appreciate donations to the Cancer Society (https://texasoncologyfoundati…) in lieu of flowers. Thank you for your kindness and understanding
