Rolf's obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Rudolph "Rolf" H. Petrmichl, who departed this life on July 7th, 2025. Born on February 23rd, 1957, Rolf was a beloved father, husband, mentor, and friend. He is survived by his Wife Silvana Graf, sons Stefan and Mattias, and brother Albert.
Rolf was a level headed, introspective, thoughtful, and caring individual. He was a profound soul with an ambitious, grounded, and determined character. His responsible and organized nature served as a beacon for those around him. Rolf's life lessons included the importance of being considerate of others, using resources efficiently, thinking big picture, and taking care of one's belongings as an expression of self-respect. He believed that often the hardest route reaps the most reward. Rolf spent much time in nature and instilled that same passion in his family.
In his professional life, Rolf was a respected figure in the field of Material Science. He held a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry and was the co-inventor of more than 60 patents. He developed specialized coatings for glass and other materials. His career culminated in the position of Technical Fellow, the highest achievable position for a scientist at Guardian Industries.
His legacy was not only centered on his professional accolades but also in his role as a mentor and teacher, both personally and professionally. Rolf had an extraordinary ability to cultivate achievement in those around him, inspiring appreciation for challenge. He was a generous benefactor, contributing regularly to charities that supported the less fortunate and the environment. As his final act of kindness, he chose to be an organ donor.
In his personal life, Rolf was a cyclist, a futbol (soccer) aficionado, an audiophile, an outdoorsman, a movie buff, a mechanic, and a gardener. He was the only person determined enough to grow Peruvian peppers in Michigan. This spring, Rolf achieved a long-time dream by completing a challenging 14-mile trail with 3,454 ft of elevation gain to the base of Mt. Fitz Roy in Argentine Patagonia. Rolf would recite the periodic table instead of listening to music while exercising. He was also an avid reader of Zen Buddhism.
A Memorial service for Rolf will be held on July 23rd, 2025, at 6:30 PM at the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Ann Arbor. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the extraordinary and fulfilling life he led and the lasting impact he left on those around him.
