Ruby's obituary

Ruby Pearl (Dwyre) Davis was born on August 16, 1935, in Maitland, MO, to Ronald and Catherine (Bird) Dwyre. Ruby passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS, due to injuries sustained in a fall at her home in Mound City.

Ruby attended school in Maitland. At the age of 11, she began working at a restaurant in Maitland by washing dishes and worked her way up to part-time short order cook before graduating from high school. At 12 years old, Ruby also started carrying the St. Joseph News-Press & Gazette to subscribers morning and night, traveling about one and a half miles twice a day. The newspaper delivery system was kept in the Dwyre family for approximately 40 years with Ruby’s brother, sisters and mother taking over the job.

After graduation, Ruby began working at the Bridge Cafe and Hatchery in Mound City and helped care for an elderly lady in Mound City. Ruby married Luther (Junior) Davis, Jr., on August 31, 1954, and they established their home in Mound City. Ruby began working for Dr. J.B. McRae as an x-ray and lab technician. She continued in that position when Northwest Health Services bought out Dr. McRae’s practice. Ruby worked for 48 1/2 years for several doctors in Mound City. She often said she loved that type of work and everyone loved Ruby, both staff and patients.

Ruby was a charter member of the American Legion Junior Auxiliary Post #256 in Maitland and attended the Christian Church in Maitland. After her marriage, Ruby became a member of the Mound City United Methodist Church. She taught fourth and fifth grade Sunday School for over 40 years and influenced many young lives. Ruby was the finance secretary at the church for 40 years and served in many other positions at the church.

Ruby was a past member of the Young Matron’s Club and did volunteer work after retirement. She always had a big garden and took advantage of her good gardening skills with massive canning and making jelly. Ruby enjoyed yard work, crocheting, cooking and spending precious time with her family.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Junior; son, Gary Davis; brother, Jim Dwyre (Joyce); and sisters, Mary Jane Broker (Jim), Anna Catherine Gilliland (David), and Naomi Morgan (Jack).

Ruby is survived by her son, Richard Davis; son-in-law, Philip Rhein; daughter-in-law, Debbie Davis; grandson, Kyle Davis (Lauren); granddaughter, Kelsey Davis (Mason Hornes); great-granddaughters, Kalesi Rae-Lynn Hornes and Wrenley Lane Davis and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services will be at the United Methodist Church in Mound City on Tuesday, September 10, at 2 p.m., with visitation held at the church one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow the services at Mount Hope Cemetery in Mound City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Mound City United Methodist Church, 312 E. 7th Street, Mound City, MO 64470. Services are under the direction of Cashatt Legacy Funerals of Platte Woods, MO.
