I worked with Ruben for more than two years, and during that time he became a dear friend as well as a colleague. He had a calm, compassionate presence and was always a thoughtful listener. He was a true “glass-half-full” person who always gave others the benefit of the doubt. Not once did he ever turn down an opportunity to help someone.
I shared an office with him for about a year, and even now I still expect him to walk through the door. He loved to laugh, and he was truly the glue that held our group together. He will be deeply missed.
Ruben was a kind and gentle man. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I worked collaboratively with Ruben for the last 4 years. He was an excellent scientist and I looked forward to what he would accomplish in the years to come. He was always a calm presence and always helpful and generous with his time. I still cannot believe he is no more and I am very sorry for your loss.
I was reminded of what the Austrian dramatist, Franz Grillparzer, wrote as an epitaph for the composer, Franz Schubert, who also passed too soon:
“The art of music buried here a rich possession, but yet much fairer hopes.” Alas that we will not see what Ruben could have accomplished in science, but we will treasure our memories of him, and I will remember him whenever I see the scientific papers we have co-authored!
