Royal's obituary

Royal Wendell Eckstein Jr. broke his earthly chains May 17, 2021. He was born in a brick farmhouse in rural Ohio April 20, 1936. The first of three boys, he was a good son to Royal Sr. and Ethel Eckstein. He was preceded in death by brothers Frank and Everett Eckstein.

Married 63 years to the lovely Adrienne Anne Blake of Cleveland, he was a proud father and father in law to Royal W. Eckstein III and Julia O’Connor of Milwaukee, WI, Anne and Jerzy Kajrenius of Yakima, WA, and Emily and James Thayer of Mishawaka, IN and grandfather to Ben, Calvin, Tabitha and Sabrina Thayer.

Royal married the love of his life, Adrienne Blake, on her 19th birthday while earning his engineering degree from CASE Institute of Technology. They moved to Indianapolis when Royal III was just a toddler. There, Royal Jr. worked as an Electronic Engineer at the Naval Avionics Facility in prototype design and manufacturing for the defense of our nation. His brilliance is impossible to describe, and his accomplishments were prolific. Among them are patents, certificates of merit and the Meritorious Civilian Service award from the Department of the Navy.

Two more children were born to Royal and Adrianne in Indy - Annie in 1963 and Emily four years later. They lived in a lovely old house in Irvington, having many pets from guinea pigs, wild cats (and not wild) and German Shepherds. Family vacations were very important to Royal. He not only took his children back to Ohio to visit the Buckeye relatives, he took them to the Smoky Mountains, Florida, and across the county in a motorhome during the gas crisis of the 70s.

Retiring at the ripe old age of 57 found Royal and Adrienne traveling even more. They eventually sold the house in Irvington and chose to live a nomadic life in a series of mobile homes for 10 years. Their middle child thought they had gone off the deep end, but relaxed when she found there was a whole community of retirees that do this. Royal and Adrienne had joined them. Their motto was “Little bitty house, great big front yard”. When they had their fill of life on the road, Royal and Adrienne settled in Palm Harbor, FL enjoying dinner picnics on the waterfront and watching the sunset.

He was a talented pianist, a voracious reader and tinkerer of all manner, including culinary explorations that helped him live as long as he did. He could fix anything, and dabbled in everything from engine rebuilding, carpentry, homebrewing, to mastering the faceting of gemstones. He enjoyed singing in a barbershop quartet, engineering the house against hurricanes (because of course he did) and trying to tame the elusive ecosystem that was his backyard. He also enjoyed long walks with his canine friends. He enjoyed a good joke but often could not retell them for laughing through the delivery.
