Roy's obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Roy Daniel Sanchez on Friday December 30th, 2022 at the age of 69 in La Grande, Oregon. He was surrounded with loving family as he made his transition.
Roy was born on February 7th 1953 in Los Angeles, California to Paul B Sanchez and Emily Almaraz. He was the first of six children and the first of 27 grandchildren to Joe and Lucy Almaraz. Roy is a name derived from the French word, roi, meaning “King.” The siblings would often argue about who was the king or the boss of the family. Roy would always smile and counter with, “I am the King and the Boss.” Growing up in Baldwin Park, California, he attended Margaret Heath Elementary School, Landis Junior High, and graduated from Baldwin Park High School. After graduation, Roy was employed at a fiber glass company. Roy filled several roles including baby-sitter, protector, and “typical” older brother. We all became stronger because of him. He was also a catalyst for the rest of his siblings growing their friendships. In 1977, Roy moved to Oregon where a new journey began for him. He worked and traveled with the carnival until 1989. He followed his father’s footsteps learning the construction trade. His first construction job was working for Jay Trumble. He would work on and off with the carnival when he wasn’t working construction. Afterward, he went off to work for Weaver Construction doing concrete work, framing, and building bridges. He then went to work for Lyle Davidson doing framing and concrete work including doing framing work for Boise Cascade Lumber Mill for the Valley until he retired.
His hobbies he enjoyed were hunting, riding motorcycles, playing games, listening to classic rock, and watching football. He was a long time Raiders fan. He truly loved hanging out with his friends. He especially loved going into the woods and exploring. We knew him as a True Mountain Man. Whenever Roy would visit us in California, we would reminisce about old times or create new memories. Being around family made him happy. It made us all happy.
He is survived by his four children, Daniel Sanchez, Angelina Sheperd (Tyler), Robert Sanchez, and Ryan Sanchez. His five siblings are Paul Sanchez, Betsy Sanchez, Rita Sanchez, Thomas Sanchez, and Nancy Roman (Ramon). He also leaves behind his nephews, nieces, one great niece, aunts, uncles, many cousins, and friends, and his future grandson. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Paul B Sanchez, Emily Ruiz Almaraz, grandparents, Joe and Lucy Almaraz, Ramon and Isabel Sanchez and his partner and love of his life, Bonnie Hart.
Roy’s smile and presence will be missed. To Roy, the King and the Boss. Until we meet again. We love you.
