"Rosie"'s obituary
If the wand chooses the wizard, then the dog chooses the owner. Rosebud was born sometime around 2010 in Corpus Christi, Texas and was surrendered to the local pound for being a counter surfer. Through serendipity Rose was spotted by a local who was looking for a beagle to keep Buddy the family beagle company. Rosebud was the pound favorite because she was beautiful, sweet, adventurous and she could perform shake on command. When Rose was officially adopted in 2013 it was love at first sight. Rosebud jumped in the front seat of her mom's car, like she had always belonged there. Her mom had a beagle named Daisy when she was a little girl and she had been hoping to care for another beagle. Once home, Rosebud made best friends with her new brother Buddy. Her new family was surprised to discovery that Rose came with a unique "woo-woo" noise in addition to the usual distinctive beagle bark.
Rosebud's mom was a middle school teacher and one of her happiest memories was bringing Rose to class when they finished reading the book "Shiloh" (the children's book about the boy and the beagle by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor). The students all loved Rosebud and Buddy and they had an ice cream part that special day.
Over the years Rosebud's mom got a new teaching job closer to home and she would rush home at lunch to check on her girl and watch Jeopardy together. One year Rose's mom became sick and wheelchair bound. Rose stayed right by her side, keeping her company and didn't complain, even though mom couldn't take her on walks anymore. Rosebud had her share of medical close calls too, like a severe bout of pancreatitis. Fortunately her caring doctor Pigott was able to save her and stayed the night making sure she was okay.
Most days Rose enjoyed walks, pupcicles, and working towards her goal of smelling all the smells in the entire world. When Rose's mom started working from home, Rose became a velcro dog and spent years following her mom EVERYWHERE. She went to the store, the bank, the ocean, the hospital and anywhere that would allow dogs (and some places that wouldn't). There were good times and some difficult times too. Rose and her mom had to spend long periods apart, but she was well cared for by grandma and grandpa when mom was away.
During the pandemic Rosebud enjoyed the company of her new friends the golden retrievers Canyon, Aspen and Honey. She really loved making new friends everywhere she went.
When Rose's grandma and grandpa moved Katy, Rose was able to spend everyday with her mom. In 2025, while grandpa was in the hospital and rehab, she would visit him to lift his spirits and make everyone smile.
Just like her mom, Rosebud's favorite time of year was Christmas, she was an honorary Christmas beagle. She adored going for rides in the car to look at Christmas lights and listen to carols.
Something very curious happened to Rose the last few years of her life. Each day that Rose was alive she became more precious, more loving, more trusting and sweeter than cherry pie.
Rose became hard of hearing later in life, but she was thriving with the help of acupuncture, physical therapy and visits to the chiropractor. Everyone who saw her, immediately loved her and was impressed by how lively and engaged she was at 15 years old.
The last month of life, Rosebud became an official super beagle displaying immense bravery in the face of hospitalization and daily trips to the vet. Rosebud's doctors, nurses and technicians all confirmed her the be "the sweetest dog ever." Rosebud passed away at home surrounded by her family.
Rosebud's mom believes that Jesus gave her Rose for a short time to care for, and being the loving God that He is, who cares for all the animals, He will will care for Rose until her mom and family can be with her again. In the spirit of Paddington, Rose was sent off with a tag saying, "Please look after this beagle. Thank you."
"From the moment I say his face
The second I heard his voice
Something fell into place
Like I never had a choice
Didn't know we were incomplete
But if was so obvious
If he's looking for family
He's already one of us" - Paddington the musical (Lyrics by Tom Fletcher)
