Mary's obituary
“i was at the grocery store when you passed.
i picked out baby’s breath and some pretty flowers to fill the empty vase in my apartment.
i didn’t know you were gone yet.
i didn’t know when you called, and it went to voicemail, those would be the last words you ever spoke to me, mommy.
i didn’t know our last hug was our last hug. i didn’t know our last “i love you,” would be our final “i love you.”
the world is funny, mommy. i think it knew that your pain was starting to get too heavy for you, so it gave it to me.
but don’t worry mom, i’ll carry it for the both of us. i’ll take the weight off of you.
and finally, mommy, i think i will set it all down. i can leave it there and let it go. it won’t hurt anymore.
i’ve finally learned that we can leave the vase empty mom, because all of the pretty flowers in the world could never be enough to fill it.
love always, patricia”
