Rocky's obituary
Roscoe Albert Shorey IV, better known as "Rocky," 42 years old of Washougal, WA, passed away on March 30th, 2024 on Mt. St. Helens.
Rocky was born on July 27, 1981, to Roscoe Albert Shorey III and Virginia Yadao Shorey in Kona, HI. He moved to Vancouver, WA with his family in 1988. After Rocky graduated from Columbia River High School in 1999, he went on to study Business at Washington State University.
After graduating with a degree in Business, he became a certified personal trainer and skydive instructor. Kickstarting a career in helping others maximize their potential, Rocky went on to lead clients on mountaineering expeditions throughout the Pacific Northwest and globally. He was also a Mountain House Ambassador.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Rocky volunteered, helping others in several organizations that he held dear to his heart. These included The Range of Motion Project (ROMP) where he was on their 2021 Elite Climbing Team, summiting Cotopaxi to raise awareness and funds for underserved amputees. He was a Big Brother who mentored youth with Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest, as well as Urban Nature Partners PDX which intentionally combines the best practices of traditional mentoring and experiential outdoor education to give youth the benefits of both spending time with a mentor and spending time outdoors.
Rocky is someone who always found time to pursue his passions. He was actively involved in the fitness, mountaineering, skydiving, food-challenge, and cold dipping communities. He also found in between moments to take long trips on his motorcycle.
Rocky was predeceased by his mother, Virginia Yadao Shorey, his paternal grandfather, Roscoe Shorey Jr., and his maternal grandparents, Pio and Sofia Yadao. He is survived by his father, Roscoe Shorey III, sister, Heather Shorey, nieces, Callista and Caia Graszer, paternal grandmother, Marion Shorey-Cho, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who loved him.
Rocky Shorey will always be remembered as someone who inspired others to live a life worth living, an avid mountaineer and explorer, lover of adventure and everything outdoors, food and more food.
