Vickie's obituary
October 14, 1953 – August 9, 2022
Beloved mother, wife, sister, tita, ate and friend, Rosario Victoria Robin (also known as Victoria or Vickie) passed peacefully into the hands of our creator on August 9th, 2022. She lived her life as an example of strength, courage, perseverance, generosity, creativity and love - even to her very last breath. She was born to Maura Griarte Leyva Santos and Isidro Villanueva Santos on October 14th, 1956 in Makati, Manila, Philippines. The second youngest sister of 12 children, Victoria loved art and beauty in all its forms, whether dance, fashion, drawing or craftwork.
Despite becoming hearing impaired at an early age, Victoria was incredibly strong and determined to live a full and courageous life, being one of the first of her family to travel and move abroad. She toured Japan as a Traditional Filipina dancer and fell in love with a talented trumpet player and jazz musician, Yoshiharu Matsusaka. This fairytale romance brought her daughter Mauree Aki Matsusaka to this world - whose name ‘Aki’ symbolizes the love that built a bridge between two cultures. This bliss was unfortunately shortlived as Yoshiharu’s life was taken in a tragic car crash.
As a testament to her strength, Victoria never gave up on the dream of a better life abroad, even if it meant moving to Port Hardy, a tiny town on the North end of Vancouver island. It was here in Canada that she raised her daughter with Samuel Struhar, giving her an idyllic childhood surrounded by wild forests, oceans and tight knit community. She eventually found her way back to the ‘big’ city and has spent the last 21 years with her true partner in life, Marc Pierre Joseph Robin in the Metro Vancouver area.
Victoria was a creative soul and gifted artist, bringing beauty and style into the world through her beautiful flower arrangements, ever-expanding Christmas village, fashionable wardrobe, high-end store displays or beloved gardens. She loved bonding with her family, sending them sweet surprises and video greetings on their birthdays and being there for them in good times and bad. Victoria loved music and karaoke throughout her life, but most recently was a devoted BTS fan. Her daughter remembers that there was never just one dish on the dining room table and gives full credit to her mama for her love of cooking, hosting dinner parties and making sure everyone feels welcome in their home. Victoria delighted in hummingbirds visiting her garden, playing jazz, pop and bossa nova in the afternoon, trying new restaurants and sweet delicacies, BBQ picnic, bocce & badminton in the park, traveling new places near & far and lighthearted parlor games/challenges during the holidays to make everyone laugh. Her warm hugs and beautiful smile will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She lived with strength, courage and perseverance and even to her last breath, she did things in her own way on her own terms. She passed away peacefully in her sleep with her husband Marc and daughter Mauree by her side. Victoria was greeted by angels at her bedside and we are comforted that she has joined our faithfully departed family members in heaven until we meet again.
Victoria’s Funeral Service will be held at Good Shepherd Church (Please see details above). All are welcome - Please RSVP to Mauree (mauree.aki@gmail.com) by Thurs, Aug 18th, 2022 if you plan to attend.
The interment of Victoria’s ashes will follow at a later date in the Gardens of Gethsemani (Angels 2 building, Columbarium 27, 15694 32 Ave, Surrey BC).
