She was born to Henry Barela Sr. and Josephine Bustmante Barela in Raton, New Mexico, on May 12, 1942. She moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, along with her four siblings in her late teens early 20’s. She was the youngest of the five. She joined the marines and married James Harrison Egan Jr which resulted in her having a son, Carl Jay. After her divorce, later in life Roni met her domestic partner Mara Lyn Metzger and were together for 43 years.

She loved reading mythological fantasy books, and enjoyed gardening which she had a green thumb to grow anything. Her favorite singers were Dolly Parton, Crystal Gale, and Eddie Rabbit to name a few. In her final years she loved to watch the food network; she could never get enough of the channel. She also enjoyed puzzles from time to time and hitting the casino’s and walks on the beach with Mara and their two dogs Carson and Molly.

Roni is survived by her domestic partner of 43 years, Mara Lyn Metzger, and son, Carl Jay Egan Ricketts (husband Calvin Dean Ricketts).

Roni is preceded in death by her loving parents Henry Barela Sr. and Josephine Bustmante Barela; sisters, Margaret Valdez and Esther Buzis; brothers, Rocky Barela and Henry Barela Jr.

She will be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery.
