Ronald's obituary

On January 9, 2023, our father passed away at home surrounded by his family after a brief decline in health, he was 88 years old. He is survived by many loving family members, including his daughters, Leslie Campbell (Ron), Kristen Schaugaard-Green (Stephen), Collette Brown (Len) and Biz Schaugaard (Gov Landrum), his grandchildren Maddie and Nate Wilshire, Davis and Walker Brown, Emma and Sam Green, his brothers Ross Schaugaard and Gary Schaugaard and their families, his brother-in-law and friend Jim Davis and his family. He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Betty Jo (BJ) Davis Schaugaard, his son Troy Schaugaard, his sister Colletta Schaugaard and his parents Bertrum Schaugaard and Thelma Adamson Schaugaard.

Dad was born in 1934 in Utah and studied English at the University of Utah before beginning his career as a pilot. He was a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Captain Shag flew for United Airlines for 33 years. He loved flying and enjoyed his life as a pilot. He was an avid skier in the mountains of Colorado, where he met his second wife, BJ through mutual friends.  After living in Evergreen Colorado for over 30 years, where they made many cherished lifelong friends, Dad retired in 1994 and he and BJ moved to Oak Island, NC where they spent their time beachcombing, fishing, boating, golfing, and gardening. They again found themselves surrounded by a wonderful group of friends. After BJ’s passing in August 2015, he moved to a small community in Mebane, NC where he quickly made good friends and neighbors. We appreciate all the kindness and care that this community has shown us over the last two months.
