Ron's obituary
After a harrowing battle with Alzheimer's, Ronald Lammert passed away on January 20, 2026. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, Ron was born in 1946 in Houston, Texas to parents Theodore and Ruth Lammert, and grew up in the nearby town of Katy. A hardworking student and tenacious athlete, Ron played football for the Katy High School Tigers, and would later go on to play football at Trinity University in San Antonio.
Decades of Ron's life were active in print media. In college he was editor of the yearbook and received his undergraduate degree in journalism. He then worked as a reporter for the San Antonio Light, and would go on to earn an advanced Degree in Communication and Media Studies from the University of Texas. In 1973 Ron founded Lammert Publications, Inc., in San Antonio, publishing community and business newspapers, local magazines, directories, and maps, often working with Chambers of Commerce and other local organizations. Ron later created the Historical Publishing Network (HPN Books), a division dedicated to crafting coffee-table and heritage books that celebrated and promoted communities, cities, and regions. Ron wrote and edited dozens of books that focused on local history, culture, people, and landmarks, commissioned or sponsored by local governments, chambers of commerce, nonprofits, and other civic institutions.
Ron was a spirited history buff and genealogist. A descendant of the Slavic group known as the Wends, his writings on the Wendish descendants of Texas are still frequently cited in Wendish research. He volunteered and supported the Texas Wendish Heritage Society, and also annually helped build the Wendish booth at the Texas Folklife Festival, introducing thousands of visitors to Wendish culture.
An active member of Concordia Lutheran Church for the majority of his life, Ron served as an Elder and would go on to author and publish a commemorative history book for the church, "The Concordia Story”. He especially treasured his experiences at Concordia doing mission work in South America and attending weekly meetings of the Men’s Bible Breakfast. Along with his service to his local church, Ron also served on the board of the Lutheran Outdoor Ministries of Texas (LOMT), dedicating much of his time to supporting Camp Lone Star, the summer camp his father co-founded decades before in La Grange, Texas. His love for the community of Camp Lone Star would lead him to write another book, "In the Midst of God’s Creation: 75 Years at Camp Lone Star".
Ron had numerous hobbies and interests. He had a pilot license and regularly flew his single-engine plane. He loved deer hunting, fishing, cycling, baseball, old country music, barbecue and Texas chili cooking. Ron was happiest when he was supporting others, especially his family and the communities he cared for so deeply. "Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid" was his mantra.
Ron called Helotes, Texas his home for nearly 40 years. He is survived by his wife Glenda Lammert. They shared over fifty-six years of loving marriage together. He is also survived by his sister Bekki Lammert, his three daughters Katy "Missy" Lammert, Johanna Lammert, Christy O'Shoney and her husband Daniel O’Shoney, and his two granddaughters Amelie Lammert and June O'Shoney.
