Ron Elmer, my older friend from back in Manlius.........he was more like a Grandfather and Mentor for so many years....almost 20. I've heard every story, probably 10 times over......and seen every picture in his catalog 100s of times. However, I never did read his 5 totally filled personal medical history files! He was meticulous. I visited Ron a few times while he was of course living at home, then in the care facility in Chittenango....and every week for a year, ordered him in some decent food from a local restaurant. Took him on country drives where he'd regale me in stories from yesteryear. Of course he'd always get hungry and point me towards another eatery we had yet to try. I can say this.....he never stopped talking, and the conversation always included his daughters, Stephanie and Roxanne......stories of crashing cars, well drilling with his dad, selling real estate, and then just handyman work. The man was a wealth of knowledge. He also spoke often of his wife, never divorced, and I believe he still loved you Mrs. Elmer, he spoke of you often. He loved trucks, his Ford, his Chevy's......and all those junk cars on his property......but they were all treasures to him. His Model A Ford Truck.....his prize possession. Ron was explicit.....do not turn his treasure into some Rat Rod....keep it Original. I offered to finance his desire to restore the Model A truck, but he said No. Ron purchased that truck for $75 when he was a young man. He carted it off to Cazenovia for the Car Club guys to see at the local park....and one time he started it and ran it around his property, just all smiles!!!!I would love to have that Model A Truck just to restore back to what Ron wanted. He also had the leftovers of the 1969 Chevelle that apparently Roxanne smashed a few times. He worked hard to straighten out the metal, and wanted to much to get that back on the road. His property is a Treasure Trove of historical artifacts that he held as precious to his heart. Old Gas Pumps, Signage and everything inside had a story to tell, and he'd gladly tell it. One man's trash is not always another's treasure, but Ron's Treasure was just that.....his worldy goods, and his love of his daughters and wife. He may not have always said he was sorry, but he was....he was kind, considerate, knowledgeable, a friend to all, including his guys who met at the Chittenango Burger King for coffee. The most funniest time ever with Ron was at the local Tractor Supply Store, when he decided to purchase some Horse Medicines (for joints) which he would mix up with some Orange Juice in the morning...... He said it helped and that's all that mattered and every once in a while I'd offer to buy him a bale of hay....which he always said some words in return. I will and already do miss Ron, or as I called him "Elmer".......him and his trucks, his stories, his faithfulness, his honesty, and most of all his friendship. Rest well Ron, I was lucky enough to have met you and you were kind enough to extend a hand of friendship. I will never forget your legacy.
