Barb, Scott, Andy, and Amy:

I was terribly saddened to learn of Ron's passing.  He was a great friend to me during my time in Athens and wonderful help with the hockey program.  Who onboard will ever forget him driving the Athens Hockey Club on the green bus to the Igloo in Pittsburgh.  I could always get great advice from Ron as we built that team.  I cherished knowing him.  Please know that I wanted to be at the service in Athens but there was just no way to clear my schedule.  I would have loved to see all of you again.

To Ron's loving wife, Barb;

I always found Ron to be full of humor and blessed with a  generosity of spirit. He seemed like a "man's man" which I always admired. I am very sorry for your loss.

Your fellow choir member,

                      Mike Bila

Crossing paths with Ron Dingle during my formative years is one of the best things that ever happened to me. In seventh grade, my parents drove me 3.5 hours south to Ohio University for “boating adventure camp”, which I had registered for on a whim. There I discovered a new world of people, activities, and a lifestyle that I had never been exposed to. “Mr. D” was at the center of that world. What a charismatic leader and mentor he was over the years! Knowledgeable, competent, versatile, humble, kind…the list goes on. I learned so much from him during formal lessons, informally (such as during early-morning drives to check river levels), and just as often by simply watching his example. An example of what it means to be a good person. A person of good character, who lived life well and fully. A wise man who knew what was meaningful: Family, friends, purposeful work, learning, wild places, the rewards of human-powered travel through those wild places, physical and mental exertion, a good dog (or a few!), conversation and/or quiet reflection around a campfire, a mug of steaming coffee in the morning and perhaps a stronger drink at the end of a day well-spent. Throw in a bit of chilly river water and the unmistakable scent of funky neoprene for good measure! One of Ron’s most defining characteristics was his talent and enthusiasm for passing on his knowledge. If you wanted to learn, there was no limit to what Ron was willing to teach you. And he did so unselfishly and patiently. He gave freely of his time and experience and expected nothing in return. It isn’t hyperbole to say that meeting Ron Dingle changed the course of my life, and I know I’m not alone. Ron had such a positive impact on so many young people over the years and continued to do so as we all got older. He was a catalyst to turn people on to a world of adventure that helped to build us professionally and, I suspect even more importantly, to enrich and sustain us personally. I will always think of Ron Dingle with great admiration and respect. I owe him a lot. Thank you, Mr. D! It was truly an honor and a pleasure to know you.
Ron was my Big Brother at Beta Zeta Chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma International Fraternity .  He was kind soul and a good guide in Chapter affairs. His gentle way made brotherhood  a welcomed time  in my college life,

I remember going to chat with Mr. D. about a scouting trip down to the NRG and Greenbrier River when I was in grad school. As I picked his brain about the two rivers to build out my trip plan he said “let’s just go down there this weekend and check things out.” I was quick to take him up on his offer and we set out that weekend for a 2-night WV river scout. This was the only time I ever spent multiple days one-on-one with Mr. D, but all I can remember was how thankful I was for him to share his time and to make the effort for me as a student. The best part of that trip is that it rained the whole time and when ended up ditching a tent for a cheap hotel and a 6-pack of Budweisers. I remember him telling me “my days of sleeping in a tent in the pouring rain are over. Let’s get a damn hotel.” Mr D. is a legend and instilled a real appreciation for what being an outdoor educator is all about. Thanks for your teachings, Mr D. You made an impact on so many.
