Ronald's obituary

Ronald Lee Berwick

August 16, 1943 – January 22, 2025

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude, we celebrate the life of Ronald Lee Berwick, who passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on January 22, 2025. Born on August 16, 1943, he was the son of the late Gladys Fitzgerald Berwick and James Berwick. Ronnie grew up in Lincoln alongside his six siblings and his many Fitzgerald and Swain cousins, forming bonds that would last throughout his life. Ronnie is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Susan Kline Berwick; their two daughters, Jody Berwick da Silva and Jamie Shackleton; and his three cherished grandchildren, Andrew Shackleton, Giuliano da Silva, and Giada da Silva. He is also survived by two of his siblings, Patricia Biddle and Richard Berwick, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as friends who considered him family. Preceding him in death were his elder brothers James (Jimmy) Berwick Jr, Walter Berwick, Albert (Jay) Berwick, and Edward Berwick.

A proud veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, Ronnie served his country with dedication and pride. After his service, he joined his father’s radiator repair business, Lincoln Body Shop, where he fixed anything and everything, usually over a beer with friends. Ronnie was a staple of Southern Delaware mechanics known for his honest hard work for almost four decades.

Throughout his life, Ronnie was known for his love of the outdoors, whether he was out on the water fishing and clamming, water skiing barefoot, or enjoying a round of golf or tennis. Ronnie had a passion for country line dancing, card games with friends and family, and hunting. He was an avid gardener and devoted much of his time to caring for the horses in the backyard and the many animals they had over the years, tending to the barn and pasture with great care.

Later in life, Ronnie ventured further outside of Delaware to visit with his daughters, his grandchildren and their extended families in Brazil, Tonga, and New Zealand. He also made several return trips to Hawaii, where he had served in the Coast Guard, gathering with family for reunions. The last few years Ronnie and Susan moved to Texas to be closer to Jody and her family. He was well known among the grandkids for his infamous mashed potatoes that he made weekly (sometimes more on request) and his silly banter.

Ronnie’s quiet nature, humor, and loyalty to his family and friends will be missed by all who knew him. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones forever.

A service will be held for family and friends at the First Presbyterian Church of Milford, where Ronnie served many years as a deacon: Monday 17 February from 4-7pm.
