Romeo's obituary
Romeo Resurreccion Esteves, 86, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2024, in the comfort of his home and the quiet beauty of his rose garden in National City, California. Born September 12, 1937, in the Philippines, Romeo was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, a deeply devoted father, and a generous soul who found his truest joy in nourishing those he loved.
The eldest of Venancio Esteves and Lucrecia Resurreccion’s four children, Romeo immigrated to the United States through his enlistment in the U.S. Navy, serving honorably from 1960 to 1980 as a Mess Management Specialist First Class (MS1). A Vietnam War veteran, he carried a quiet resilience and profound faith in God throughout his life.
Romeo’s heart was his family. With his wife, Rose, he raised their children—Sharleen, Joven, Stephen, and Aleksander—instilling kindness, perseverance, and devotion. His home, a steadfast haven, was perpetually filled with the comforting aromas of his legendary cooking. His adobo and other dishes were far more than food; they were invitations to lively gatherings, echoing with stories and laughter, uniting loved ones around his table. Outside, his cherished rose garden was his sanctuary, a living testament to his nurturing spirit and his pride in cultivating beauty, providing him solace in his final days. In retirement, Romeo and Rose shared joyful moments in her hometown in Leyte, Philippines, savoring simple pleasures.
Romeo is survived by his devoted wife, Rose; his loving daughter, Sharleen (John) Ehler; and his cherished sons, Joven (Angelica), Stephen (Randi), and Aleksander (Antonette) Esteves. He also leaves behind his adored grandchildren, Lillian, Esmé, and Ezra, who brought immense light into his life. He is further survived by his dear siblings, Liz (Bonifacio) Villa, Rio (Linda) Esteves, and Estela Vega; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and dearest brother, Primo Esteves.
A memorial service was held on June 24, 2024, with Romeo laid to rest at Miramar National Cemetery, a final tribute to his honorable service. Romeo’s spirit blooms in every rose, simmers in every shared meal, and echoes in the laughter and love he nurtured in his family. In his memory, we invite you to cook a favorite dish, tend a garden, or simply gather with loved ones to share stories and laughter, just as Romeo so lovingly did.
