In the past year of missing you, it has seemed too much to bear. Hope that one day we will wrap our arms around you again is the only thing that has carried us. Seeing your beautiful smile and your sparkly eyes, the way your mom and dad adore you, the way your sweet presence made anyone smile, and memories of you bring us peace. We love you, dearest boy. Happy Birthday, Roman

remembering Roman on his birthday. Little espresso spoons, double rainbows, and Vicenza will always make me think of him. Grant and I never left your house without talking so much about how amazing of parents you both are, and how it inspired us. Sending you all our love today. xx Sierra and Grant

I had just started working at the Baby Cafe on post and met Roman during play group. He was the chunkiest, sweetest, and smiliest little boy I had ever seen.  Just looking at him made your day brighter .

Sam I will never forget sitting on the floor of the baby cafe with you and Roman before you were to PCS talking to you about all things post partum and motherhood.

I will cherish the memories I have of Roman and am so blessed to have known such a beautiful little boy💕

For a long time this has felt too private and personal to share, but it’s been a year since this memory and I’ve treasured it more as time passes.

Sweet boy. Let me tell you about my favorite day with you. Almost a year ago, your aunties, grandma, and I came to visit you and your mama in Italy. We had lots planned and you joined us on so many outings. Everywhere we went, you were adored. From the streets of fair Verona to the rocky shores of Lake Garda, people stopped us in the streets to admire you. Waiters asked to hold you and kissed your face 😬 people tickled your feet and patted your cheeks. We never sat in one place without an Italian trilling over you.

My last day there was just an ordinary day for you, but is a day now so treasured by me. I pretended I was tired, but really I knew I would not get a day like this for a long time, so I stayed behind with you and mama. There was never a day before or a day after that I didn’t have my arms full with your cousins, or have to compete with aunts, uncles, grandparents who wanted to hold you too. That day, I didn’t have to share you or you me (except with your mom, but she didn’t mind).

We had breakfast in the heart of Vicenza at a little cafe. We had eggs and a parfait, and toast. You were covered. We changed your outfit. And like anywhere, you were adored.

We stopped at a grocery store, we went to our AirBnB for a break and so I could pack. And we played. I held you and played with you for the first and only time, uninterrupted.

And my snapshot ends. I didn’t get 100 of these days or even 2, but I am endlessly grateful for that 1. I am so grateful to your mom for that simple, ordinary day, that has become so special to me. I treasure it. I won’t see you for a long time and that feels unbearable most days, but then most days I can remember your egg covered face, your warm chubby hand on my arm, and your smile that made everyone feel undeniably loved. And it simultaneously makes me miss you terribly and makes me glad that I got to be just Roman’s aunt for one whole day.

One of my favorite memories with Roman was when you guys came to visit us in Florence and we went out to this Chinese spot for dinner. The Italian woman who was running the restaurant was so in love with Roman. There was a mom and an eight-year-old girl sitting at a table across from us and Roman was so interested in this little girl, he just kept peeking around everybody to try and look at her and she was smiling and staring back at him. It was such a sweet moment. I remember that whole restaurant was just lit up with how much everybody in there loved Roman, even the people who didn't know him were so entranced by his energy and his light. I couldn't stop smiling at the interaction. A few weeks after he passed, Grant and I accidentally stumbled back across that restaurant. We both just stood at the doorway for a few seconds staring inside and realizing where it was. The same Italian woman was still working. after a few moments, we agreed to just go somewhere else and leave that memory as it was. Grateful for all the time we had❤️
When Sam first told me she was pregnant: She came to VES during summer break, when most staff are off, I was working as the secretary. She told me about her weekend (it was fathers day weekend) and showing me photos on her phone. When she scrolled to what I thought was an at home covid test and it turned out to be her positive pregnancy test. I jumped out of my chair- crazy excited and hugged her tightly. I'd never seen someone so enamored with their baby they had to wait months to meet. Sam always shines with love, but for those 9 months she beamed- and she never stopped one Roman was born.

Dillon and Cullen went throug…
Dillon and Cullen went through RASP together. When I would FaceTime Dillon, he would ask Cullen to show me pictures of Roman, saying “you have to see how cute my friends’ baby is”. From time to time Dillon would share more stories and pictures from Cullen with me. Fast forward a few months…. Dillon and I had the pleasure of meeting and spending an evening with Sam, Cullen and Roman in January. We could not get over how content and happy he was. His chubby cheeks and that precious, very contagious smile was something we could not stop talking about. He was so willing to go to us & was SO lovable. We absolutely adored him and the time we spent together that evening. In the short time we spent together, it was obvious Roman was very loved. Sam and Cullen’s love for Roman exuded and it was apparent how wonderful of parents they were and how lucky Roman was to have them. Dillon and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to have met Roman. Thinking of your family always and sending love ❤️ -Rachel and Dillon
