Roman's obituary
Roman was born on the brink of WWII, September 12, 1939 to Misha Reydman and Broneka Kaplan in Zhitomir, Ukraine.
Roman fell in love with his Yolka (Ella / Alisa) in 1961. After marrying in 1965, they were inseparable for 56 year. They lived an active life, full of adventure and friendship behind the Iron Curtain, and raised two sons, Max and Andrew. To provide them with a better future, in 1979, they immigrated from the USSR to Canada. We are immensely grateful to Roman for his vision of our lives in Canada.
Roman was a man of reason with a tremendous work ethic. At the start of his career, he continued to expand his knowledge of Mathematics and Cybernetics, and published several articles and books. He was recognized by top institutes in these fields, where he earned his Ph.D. He also qualified as a Professional Engineer, and had a rewarding career in Canada with Nortel.
While having a full-time job, Roman was also a serial entrepreneur. His visionary projects were ahead of their time: typing tutoring software in 1982, TaxVisor in 1984, and CompuStyle hair salon software in 1986. When the USSR opened up, together with Boris Gitman, he even tried his luck at being a boxing promoter! Roman found success in developing algorithmic trading systems together with his sons. In 1997, he and Max moved to Bermuda to manage an investment fund. It is there that his love of sailing began, leading to sailing trips in the Greek and Caribbean islands.
After retirement, Roman could not believe that he waited so long to become a carpenter and do-it-yourselfer at his cottage. He loved building and improving Pine Point cottages.
Roman had many friends whom he loved and often wrote songs and poetry for. He had a strong command of words with great wit and an incredible sense of humour. He was also a frequent stage performer during many celebratory concerts, which earned him several community “Oscar” nominations. He has always placed the needs of his family and friends first and was known for helping many people, especially newcomers to Canada. His kindness is known by the long list of immigrants who got off to a good start in Canada because of his generosity and care.
Roman embodied the do-it-yourself philosophy, from designing and building his family home and cottage to writing tax advice and investment management software. He was a spirited entrepreneur and successful investor - determined to provide for his family in the land of new opportunity. His family and friends meant more to him than anything else in the world. He always wanted to see those around him be their best, and was generous with his time and wisdom. He was unendingly proud of his wife and sons and always tried his best to support them. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, passing down his knowledge, and instilling the importance of education.
Anyone who knew Roman, knew that he was the most loving father, grandfather, and husband a family could ask for. He is survived by his wife Ella, his sons Max and Andrew, his daughters-in-laws Victoria and Mina, and his loving grandchildren: Sasha, Lucas, Nina, and Alex.
He believed that, ”Success is a journey, not a destination”. He lived an incredibly successful life.
Roman will always be in our hearts and memories.
On June 6th, Max will ride 100Km to raise funds for Mackenzie Health Foundation in honour of Roman - please support the charity here: https://mhf.akaraisin.com/ui/…
