Rodney's obituary
Rodney Michael Walters, 65, passed away on May 12, 2024 in Derwood, Maryland. He was born on July 11, 1958 to his mother Lula Lee (Goings) Walters and father Harold Nelson Walters in Los Angeles, California.
Rodney had very humble beginnings in South Central Los Angeles. Raised by a single mother, along with three (of his four) brothers by his side, Rodney slept in garages, church pews, boarding houses, chicken coops, and gang-ridden projects from 1958 to 1966. From 1966 to 1981, Rodney lived in Peoria, Illinois. He met his wife, Rhonda Ann Johnson, in 1974 while attending Peoria High School, where he graduated in 1977. Rodney later married Rhonda in 1981 and then moved to Silver Spring, Maryland in 1983. His daughter Radiance was born in 1984, followed by his daughter Revée in 1986. Rodney later resided in Rockville, Maryland and then Gaithersburg, Maryland, where he lived until his final day.
With merely a high school education, Rodney enjoyed a successful 30-year career in IT, climbing up the ranks to Program Manager, until he retired involuntarily due to health reasons in 2015. He was an avid world traveler, traveling to multiple countries in five out of the seven continents (including Africa, Asia, North America, South America, and Europe). He also enjoyed spending time with family, painting, reading about history and religion, writing blogs and books, researching genealogy, and watching CNN. He wrote and self-published his 262-page book, Hidden Things: Critical Thinking of Genesis 1-11 Using Scriptures, Science and Sense; his 272-page family genealogy, The Sunset Route: Generations of Family Biographies; and his personal blog, The Civil Writer.
Rodney is survived by his wife Rhonda Johnson Walters; his daughter Radiance Walters Harris and grandson Josiah Rhette Harris; his daughter Revée Michaela Simpson and son-in-law Derrick Simpson; brother Edward Catchings; brother Chauncey Walters; brother Curtis Walters; sister River Lee Catchings; and sister Margaret Clemons. He is preceded in death by his mother Lula Lee (Goings) Walters, father Harold Nelson Walters, brother Harold Oliver Walters Sr., and sister Antoinette Louise Walters Jordan.
