Rodney's obituary

Rodney Earl McBride, Jr., 15, took flight to his celestial home on Sunday, January 17, 2021. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Rodney was the only son of Dr. Chantee L. Earl and Rodney McBride, Sr. Rodney, Jr. was a freshman at Carver Early College, in Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to attending Carver, he attended Brown Middle School, The Paideia School, and Centennial Academy Charter School. A brilliant scholar and talented musician, Rodney was active in a number of clubs and academic associations. He was a Better Chance Scholar, and a member of the junior varsity cross country team. He competed in the Chess Club and played with the Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia of Metropolitan Atlanta. Rodney participated in Georgia Odyssey of the Mind and placed second in the state-wide finals in 2018. He was also active on the robotics team as a member of the National Beta Club and placed in the Georgia State Convention Robotics Showcase.

A talented musician, Rodney first performed in concert with his father when he was three years old and was his mother’s pianist until he began playing independently in the church at age nine. Rodney was a member of the Young People’s Division at Greater Smith Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and Turner Chapel AME Church where he served as a musician for the youth choirs. He was also an honorary member of Mount Welcome Missionary Baptist Church where he was employed as one of the professional musicians playing the organ. Rodney performed on his first live recording in 2020 with the Savannah Grove Baptist Church Reunion Choir, and the title song “Take Over” was released this month on the radio by the Atlanta Music Association record label.

Rodney's impact extended beyond his involvement with the church and school. He was loved by many. He was described by his friends and loved ones as an intelligent, charismatic, witty, and all-around good guy. His imprint on life and those around him will never fade.

Rodney is survived by his loving and devoted mother, Dr. Chanteé L. Earl, his father, Rodney McBride, Sr, his grandfather, Larry G. Earl, Sr, his maternal uncle, Larry G. Earl, Jr. (wife, Monique) and his paternal uncle and aunts Frederick E. McBride Sr, Alaine McBride, Marian Tilliman, and Cynthia Anderson, and a host of great aunts, uncles, cousins, extended relatives, and friends.
