Bobbie was a good friend, though she lived far from me. We shared many of the same interests. She wrote an excellent review of the book I wrote about early Los Angeles and an orphanage. She met me at the Laemmle  theater in Encino  when she could.   I admired her leadership of AU.

Monica, I'm sorry this condolence message is so late, but I only just learned of your mom's death. You may remember that I interviewed you when you were young on "Superstition, Talking Snakes, Unjust Taxes & Nonsense" (STUN), which aired on Long Beach Community Television. (I interviewed your mom on that program multiple times; I was also an AU and AAI member.) Your mom was such a strong advocate for atheism and such a warm, vibrant individual. I will always be grateful for her support. (P.S. I am retired in Eugene, Oregon, where I grew up--I married a few months ago for the first time at age 59.)

Best regards,

Bart Aikens

I had been far too long since we had made to trip to L.A. to see Aunt Bobbie and Cousin Monica. In 2013, my Granddaughter (Autumn at age 13) and I made the trip. Enjoyed a wonderful Winter Solstice feast with a full house on Edgeware. Running errands, we came to an intersection with several homeless people. Aunt Bobbie reached in her purse and gave Jack in the Box gift cards to the few close. She explained after the act to us that she carried the gift cards always to help those in need have a meal. She did have her own criteria. But her heart and actions wanted every child cared for and no one left hungry. Her subtle acts of kindness were immense. That's just who she was.

I was very sad when I heard the news of Bobbie's passing (just found out today-12/05, when I randomly went to the AU website). It is NEVER GOOD when an atheist dies. Period. The world (and especially AU) is poorer with her being gone now. All the condolences in the world to Monica, her husband, and her grand-kids, As someone who lost his father to COVID earlier this year, I completely get that there is no "upside" to losing a parent.
Bobbie was "one of a kind"!!! When I met her I felt as though we had known each other for years. She was the epitome of self confidence and extremely sincere and committed to atheism and community. I was convinced to become a member of A.U. where my beliefs were accepted and shared with like minded people. She was "one of a kind" and is missed. Thank you, Bobbie for your wisdom, humor, and frankness.
Autumn,  Bobbie's great niece and I will cherish the visits to my sisterly Aunt Bobbie's home/Heretic House. We were fortunate for every minute of everyday we spent there sharing laughter, memories, and deep discussions of life.  It is our hope and belief that the house Bobbie made into a home for  so many will continue to be a part of her uniting passion.

At a time when Atheist, Humanist and Freethought groups were not working together, Bobbie Kirkhart and I shared the understanding that working together was key to our mutual survival and progress.   She was a delightful woman and a joy to work with.  She and her contributions to the movement wil not be forgotten.

Very saddened to hear of Bobbie's passing. She was always a strong advocate, supporter and voice in the atheist community, as well as a down to earth, genuine, caring individual.  I spoke at several AU events during her tenure and visited her in her Angelino Heights home before it became the Heretic House. The community has lost an unparalleled local-national leader and ally.

From friend and freethought colleague Eddie Tabash, "Bobbie Kirkhart devoted her life to protecting Atheists and promoting Atheism. With all of her marvelous and relentless efforts, we are still very far away from the equality and social acceptance Bobbie aspired to achieve and we deserve. In memory of Bobbie, let us go forward and complete her dream, and our dream, of a society that has eliminated all prejudice against nonbelievers."

To Evan and the membership of Atheists United,

I am saddened to hear of the death of Bobbie Kirkhart. Although I have been inactive with the group for several years, I have many happy memories of working with Bobbie during the nineties and into the new millennium. She was an enthusiastic supporter of Freethinkers Toastmasters, which I co-founded with Spencer Blackwelder. Bobbie was always a class act, and her warm smile and friendly demeanor presented a positive public image of atheism. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

Bobbie was a kind and generous person. I appreciate the tremendous work she did for the free thought community, here, and world-wide. I never did get her recipe for black-eyed peas. But I will always remember with fondness the times I was with her at various Atheist United activities. Her important activism will be missed, as will her engaging and ready smile.
