Robert's obituary
Robert O. Wunderlich passed away on Monday, May 2nd, 2022. Bob was born in Ellisville, Missouri on April 29th, 1942, but spent most of his life in Matteson, Illinois. Bob attended Zion Lutheran School where his father was a teacher and principal. He graduated from Rich High School and attended Prairie State College.
On September 1st, 1961, at the age of 19, he met the love of his life, Diane Umland. They were married on July 29th, 1967 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Chicago Heights and celebrated over 54 years of marriage. Bob had many interests including fishing, stamp collecting, scuba diving, boating, and water skiing. All of those interests changed with the births of his sons Brent and Dean. They were his greatest joy.
Bob served over 3 years in the Navy and shortly afterwards began his 40 year career at Ford Motor Company's Chicago Stamping Plant in Chicago Heights. He held various positions in the company and finished his career in the Accounting Department as a financial analyst where he was referred to as "The Legend." During his time at Ford, he received several car awards in recognition for his ideas that saved the company money.
Family was what defined Bob. He was the son of the late Ernest & Helene (Jirgal) Wunderlich, the husband of Diane (Umland), the father of Brent (Ashley) and Dean (Allison), and the very proud grandfather of Ava Jane (5), William Michael (3), Lila Ann (2), and Henry Robert (4 months). He was a loving brother to Carole (Steverson), Linda (deceased), and Ken, and proud uncle to many nieces and nephews. In addition, he is survived by his aunt Louise (Jirgal) Edgar and several cousins.
A service of celebration and remembrance will be held on Monday May 16th at 11:00AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Richton Park with Pastor Bryan Reeves officiating. There will be an opportunity to visit with the family from 10:00AM-10:45AM prior to the service.
