Robert came to visit me in college over a weekend.  While he was there, we decided to form a couple of teams to play Bid Whist.  If you REALLY knew Robert,  then you know how much he didn't like to loose.  Well, being his sister, I knew there would be a problem if he didn't win.  But what I didn't expect was a missing card, which was a 10 of diamonds that my team needed to win.  Instead of my team winning, Robert's team won.  Later on before he left to return back to school, he teased me with the card which he had stolen.  He declared victory and said you will never get this card back.  He was right because we never got the card back and he often reminded me of that game.  He told me to always focus and keep my eyes on the prize and not to trust, no matter how well you believe you know someone.

On February 10, 2022, Robert and I talked for two hours and that Bid Whist game came up in the conversation, and once again, he declared victory.  I wish he could have declared victory over lung cancer.

Of the five brothers I had, Robert was the big brother I grew up with and he was by bodyguard and friend.  We always closed our conversation with, love you and hope to see you soon.  We never said good-bye.

To The Pearson Family,

I am so sorry to hear about Robert's passing. Our family was just around the corner from Stephenson and down the street.  Robert spent countless hours talking with me and my mother, Mrs. McGee.  Not only was he an outstanding athlete, but he was special to so many people. Friends and classmates were sadden to hear the news. Freeport is a small town, so growing up people were connected with one another as friends and/or relatives. I will pray for you during this time and the time to come.  LaFrancine McGee Baker
