Robert's obituary

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our beloved Dr. Robert Donald Russell who has passed away on Easter Sunday, April 12th 2020. As a father, son, brother, friend, surgeon, and colleague, Robert has touched each of our hearts in such special ways. He left us far too early, but the impact he had on our lives is everlasting.

Rob was born in Memphis, TN and grew up in Dallas, TX. He graduated from Plano West Senior High, and received a Bachelors in Engineering from Cornell University, where he played on the varsity soccer team. He attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, where he graduated with honors and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha. He then completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Southwestern and a fellowship in Adult Hip & Knee Reconstruction at OrthoCarolina. Following fellowship, he practiced as an orthopaedic surgeon at the W.B. Carrell Memorial Clinic and OrthoTexas Physicians & Surgeons, both in the Dallas area. He completed extensive research and published numerous papers in peer reviewed literature.

Rob was a committed and loving father, and he is survived by his sons Henry (born 2015) and Ben (born 2017). In Rob’s honor, we are establishing an education fund for Henry and Ben. We seek solace in knowing that the boys can continue to help others.

In the coming months when we are able to safely gather together and celebrate Robert's life, we will host a memorial service in his honor. We will follow up with details.

While we may never fully understand this early loss, we take solace in Robert’s profound impact on those he encountered and the certainty that he is now resting peacefully. As we cope with his passing, we wanted to share the following poem in hopes that it provides some condolence during this challenging time.

Come with me
God saw he was getting tired
And a cure was not to be.
So He put his arms around him
And whispered, "Come with me."

With tearful eyes we watched him suffer
And saw him fade away.
Although we loved him dearly,
We could not make him stay.

A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.
