Edward Barcus
1987, US 31 North of SR 110 NB Argos IN
I will never forget the very first traffic ticket I received. I was 19 yrs. old, driving NB on US 31 north of SR 110 driving about 80 MPH. Shortly after crossing 110, in my rear view mirror were the double red bubbles on a later 80's Crown Vic and the distinctive ISP stripe and shield. The trooper exited, put on his hat and approached the driver's door. The nice trooper asked for my license and registration and asked why I was in such a hurry. I advised that there was no particular reason. The trooper had me exit my truck and have a seat in his squad car with him. While in the car the trooper asked if I was in college, I advised that I wasn't but I was working full time. The trooper making small talk asked if I had any career goals. I told him I had always wanted to be a police officer and was worried that getting a ticket might work against me. In a perfectly straight face, the trooper said "If you apply for a department and they don't find even a traffic ticket, they'll think you're too clean and won't even be interested". The nice trooper then handed me my traffic ticket for driving "69+/55 zone". Little did I know at that time that the nice trooper, who I later found out was named Robert J. Rich, would become such a great friend. I have soooo many stories about fun times with Bob, Michael Shane and others that I could go on for hours. Words cannot express how hard it hurts to lose such a great friend, but I know that he is looking down on all of us posting stories and comments and saying in true Bob Rich fashion "Oh Geez..." all while bowing his head and throwing his hands in the air... Rest in peace my good friend, you will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing you and calling you a true friend.

Bob was the nicest person anyone would ever want to encounter. He was the ideal mold of an Indiana State Trooper. He will be greatly missed. R.I.P. Bob! Hearts and prayers to your family.

We are really saddened by the passing of Bob. He was a truly great person and will be missed. He was a good friend and a family man. We worked closely with both the ISP and IGC. He was always there when you needed him. Kathy, remember he was loved by his friends.

We lost a great man today. He knew no strangers and neither did his family. Always making sure we talked whether it's when I still worked at the Hut or running into them at the store. Hugs and prayers to you all.
Sincerely,
Tammy (Havron) Southern

My sincere condolences to the Rich family. It seems like just yesterday he retired from ISP and we were processing paperwork.

Bob was a big brother to me in every sense of the word. By his life, he showed us all how to live and love life... as a husband, as a father, as a friend. He was simply exemplary. I will miss him terribly.
Bob and Kathy stood up with us for our wedding on 11/17/1989. They, too, had only been married a few months. Their love for each other inspired us deeply and we wanted to find the same love. We did, and 30 yrs. Later we still thank them daily for being such good friends. Time , careers, and locations, separated us physically, but never emotionally. On our wedding night, Bob and Kathy drove us to Mishawaka in what seemed like a blizzard. There we shared a wonderful meal at the Red Lobster and that's still our favorite place. God bless you dear friend. Rest easy. And Kathy we are there for you, like you were for us. Please don't hesitate to call if you need anything. Love you, Mike and Mary Guyse

There are no words...Truly the best of the best! The man the rest of hope to be. I will never forget his laugh. I was always welcome in his home. So much advice he would give me when I needed it. Surprised me and was at my ILEA graduation party. So many early morning cop coffee and breakfast laughs.....I wil never forget you my friend! A great Father and husband. You definitely with no doubt left a great impression on many. You absolutely will be missed! Being in Culver or Marshall county will never be the same now. God Bless you and your family.

My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Rich and family. Bob was my POP’s Sergeant for a period of time. Bob was as pure as a new snowfall. I loved to embarrass him and make him laugh. No finer man will ever walk this Earth than Bob. I am saddened by his passing, he was my friend.
